[per press association.] WELLINGTON. Jan. 2

The winds backed to westerly and northerly on Sunday, increasing generally with falling barometer in mcst parts. The direction changed to southerly this morning in the southern half of the South Island, a small low pressure passing in the south last night, Rain lias fallen on the west coast and in the southern districts, and cloudy and hazy conditions have ruled generally, but conditions hare improved today. The forecast on present indications is for. moderate to strong southerlywinds, hacking to westerly and increasing southwards of Westport, Kaikoura, and freshening northerly and westerly winds elsewhere, for another low pressure area is due to pass in the south shortly. Warm and hazy conditions are probable on the east coast, but more unsettled weather will follow, especially over the South Island.
