TAFT’S SHIRT-SLEEVE POLITICS
BERLIN PAPER’S RIDICULE
Declaring that the United States is afraid of war .and that President Taft has made himself the laughing-stock of .Europe, the Berlin “Post”, one of the most conservative German papers, denounces the Americans as lacking in diplomatic manners. “The United States,” writes the “Post,” “has always been lacking in culture and breeding, and lias shown a failure to have any conception of good manners in political affairs. . “The action of President Taft is a shining example of shirt-sleeve politics, and .shows that the supposedly conservative President possesses the rough -cowboy spirit that flourishes in American political circles. _ “America’s position is one of political insolence. President Taft is assuming the role as guardian _ of the world’s morals, and the theatrical pose of the United States should not be taken seriously. “Russia will stand firm, and America will not dare to go to war. If she does Russia can count on Japan to use her fleet to protect Slavonic possessions in the Orient.”
