CREW’S PERILOUS TIME
SIX DAYS IN AN OPEN BOAT
[UNITED PRESS ASSOClATlON—copyright] (Received Jan. 2, 8.5 p-m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 2. A boat containing; the mate and nine men of the Norwegian ship- Asko-y hao arrived at Ya mha . It is reported that the vessel is. a total wreck at Elizabeth Reef, 300 miles due east of the Clarence River. She struck on- Wednesday last. The castaways had a. trying experience in the boat. Other advices state that another boat, containing the captain and nine other mem of the Asi coy's crew has roadbed Noumea. All aboard are thus accounted for. (Received Jan. 2, 10.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 2. The Askoy survivors had a strenuous experience. They are in a bad state, through exposure and shortage of food. They state that the ship was driven on Elizabeth Reef last Wednesday, during thick weather. All are destitute, having been unable to save ’anything fi'om the wreck. A message received stating that the captain’s boat was picked up by the Vi lie del Aciotat and conveyed to Noumea. The Askoy was bound from South America to Newcastle in ballast. (Received Jan. 3. 12.30 a..m) SYDNEY, Jan. 2. The Askoy was carried on the reef at eleven o’clock at night, by strong currents at high water. It was impossible to shift her. Nothing was seen of the reef before striking.
