HOTEL DESTROYED
[UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION COPYRIGHT] HALIFAX, December 31. A fire destroyed the King Edward Betel and several large, buildings adjoining. The temperature was below zero. HOUSE RAZED. PALIIATUA, January 2. A four-roomed house at Scarborough, occupied by Mr G. Baker, and owned by H. Dilion, was destroyed by fire. Tho outbreak originated, through clothes left in front of the fire igniting. The insurances arc 100 on the house and £IOO on the furnitureWELLIXGTON OTJT.BREAKSWELLINGTON, January 2. A sixteen-roomed house in Tinakori road, owned by F. Sheriff, and occupied by Airs Margaret Diamond as a boardinghouse. was destroyed by fire at 1.30 this morning. The hoarders were all ■away. Air and Airs Diamond were alone in the house. Very little was saved. The insurance on the house was £7OO in the Norwich office and on the furniture £4-50 in the Liverpool office.
News has been received of the total destruction by fire of the famous carved Maori house “Takitunni,” at the Tablelands, Alartinboreugh. From the meagre particulars available, it appears that ‘■T.akitumu” was razed to the ground. It is understood. 1 that at the time of fire, 10 p.m. on Sunday, there was only one native about the place. The origin of file fire is a mystery. The police are cond acting i n vest iga ti ons.
BUSINESS CENTRE DAAIAGED BLENHEIAI. January 2
A fire ocurred in the business centre of Blenheim at midday yesterday, the locality being a-t Perry’s stationary and toy shop and Sainsburv’s, working jeweller. Sainsbury was working in the forenoon. He left for lunch. Shortly afterwards smoke was noticed at tile back of his premises. The brigade prevented the fire spreading. Sainsbury’s workroom -was completely gutted. Nothing was saved. Perry’s stock was mostly damaged by water. Owing to the holiday the insurances are nob available. WHOLESALE STORE BURNED. TIMARU, Jan. 2. The wholesale store of John Edmond, hardware merchant, with the contents, was wholly destroyed by fire between 5 and 6 last evening. The store was situated in Hayes street reclamation, and fortunately to the leeward end of a row of valuable stores and a timber mill. The fire burned fiercely, and the firemen had an unpleasant duty in keeping near the building, so great was the heat from it. The local manager is absent ini > ? Dunedin, and the values and insurances are not available. WAREHOUSE GUTTED. INVERCARGILL, Jan, 2.
A fire occurred at. 5 yesterday 'morning. A galvanised iron warehouse, belonging to Broad, Small and Co., at the rear of the Dee street premises, with a large quantity of general hardware, was destroyed. The damage is estimated at between £3OOO and £4OOO. The insurance amounted to £2500 in the Royal, National, and' Yorkshire offices.
