CRICKET.

SATURDAY’S GAMES

The following will represent the Alhambra juniors in their match against Matawhero next Saturday at the Domain :—Sim, Turei, Atkinson, Westren, Porter, Deen, McLisky, Guilford, Sugden and Lucas.

TUPAROA V. MR. K. S. WILLIAMS ELEVEN.

SOME GOOD SCORING

That cricket, on the Coast, where the game used to flourish a few years back, is not altogether dead, is proved by a match which was played at Matahiia on Boxing Day. The game was arranged by Mr. K. S. Williams, President of the Tuparoa _ Club, between a team selected by himself and the Tuporoa eleven. The match was played at Mr. Williams’ homestead at Matahiia, where a good private wicket is obtainable on a very suitable playing field. The day was not an ideal one for cricket, rain threatening most of the time, though it fortunately held off while play lasted. The Tuparoa team was a strong one, including such well-known players as E. R. Ludßrook, W. H. Skiteh, and W. Oakden, but they met a superior team on the day’s play in the side the President had got together to meet them. Mr. Williams’ team batted first, and took advantage of first hands to run up the fine score of 295. E. T. Wilder, the ex-Can-terbury player, was in great scoring vein, and played a very fine innings, which was marked by sound defence, combined with aggression. He made fine strokes all round the wicket, and went merrily on his run-getting way until he had passed - the century, when he retired for a splendidly-compiled score of 101. W. N. Philson, the onetime prominent North Shore (Auckland) representative, also got going in his best form, and played free and attractive cricket for his 88. C. Nurse, who is well-known to Gisborne players, strung 38 together in nice style, and Hesketh, Beale, and Starkey also ran into double figures. The bowling figures of the Tuparoa men were somewhat , battered, but they stuck, to their work well. Ludbrook (four), W. H. Skiteh (three), and W. H. O. Johnston (two), secured the wickets. On going to the wickets, the Tuparoa eleven found the bowling of A. M. Beale (five for 17), and R. H. Wicksteed (five for 32), too good for them, and the whole side fell for 50. W. Oakden, the ex-Auckland colt, shaped nicely for 22, but he was the only batsman who could get going. Beale, it will be remembered, is the old exHawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay trundler, who, with A. Crawford, was responsible for the downfall of the Hawkes’s Bay representative eleven, which included* A. E. Trott, at Gisborne, a few years back. Beale on that occasion secured the trophy which was awarded to the player securing the best average. It is pleasing to see that he has lost little, if any, of his' old cleverness. Both he and Wicksteed bowled finely in this match, and the Tuparoa batsmen could do nothing against them. Mr and Mrs K. S. Williams treated their guests most hospitably, and their kindness made the match one of the most thoroughly enjoyable which has ever been played on the Coast. The following are the scores: — MR K. S.
