AUSTRALIA AND IMMIGRANTS.
' DOES NOT OFFER ENOUGH. IS TOO FASTIDIOUS. EMPTY LANDS A TEMPTATION. [UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT] (Received January 5, 11.30 p.m.) n LONDON, Jan. 5. The “Times” states that the Commonwealth defence policy has been removed from a sphere of partisanship, and immigration should similarly be moved. The Federal Government is too leisurely, but those clamoring for Federal co-operation are too fastidious about the class of emigrants, and too economical in the advantages they offer. Australia must learn that she doesn’t confer a favor on emigrants in allowing them to enter. Nowadays an empty land is a perpetual temptation to nations whose territory is inconveniently restricted, and the Federal Government should provide adequate ship, ping accommodation by chartering ships or giving shipping companies requisite guarantees.
