GISBORNE’S NEW HOSPITAL.

WORK ON THE SITE COMMENCED. what th:; contractors are L/JING. On. an eminence to tlie right of Ormunu Ro.i-a «.x, a point not far beyonu the Manga papa schcolhous-e there nas bcin at work for the past Rnv days a sum!! gnvg of men who ar? preparing the way for the contractors who are v:. erect the new hospital. A member of the firm . of Trevor Bros. Ltd., of Wellington, contractors for the building, is supervising the initial steps, and has some twenty men employed on and about the ground at present. A ‘•Times'’ representative' paid a visit to the site yesterday morning, and was shown over the ground. The fresh southerly breeze prevailing at the time came up from the bay in invigorating gusts, which were refreshing lifter the dust-Ladon atmosphere of the lower regions. Here and there about the plateau on which the institution is to be erected are pegs* which mark out the positions and areas to be taken up by the various buildings. In the foreground as one approaches from the town is to stand the nurse’s home, and this will command a view of the town and bay superior to any to be had from any other section of the buildings. Further to the right a line of pegs indicates where the main building is to stand, and, while being more protected from the sweep of the southerly winds, this structure will stand well to the morning sun. Outbuildings such as stables, caretaker’s cottage, etc., are marked out at a point to the west, and a fairly deep gully dips between these andl the site of the main building. The incursion of this gully from the rear gives the plateau a similarity in general outline to a horseshoe, but in no way can it be seen that it detracts from tlie value of the site The contractors have already commenced to lay down a light ti-amway on which the building materials will bo conveyed from Ormond Road. This will be of inestimable value to them during the winter months, as the near approaches to the site are not yet metalled, and would soon <mt up under tiie strain of heavy traffic. Mr Barton, of the firm of AY. Barton and felon, of Wellington, who have been entrusted with the highly important sanitary work, is also at- present in Gisborne and is making arrangements for the laying down of a temporary water supply to tlic site. The, discovery of a spring on t-Ue ground a. day or two ago. gave promise that tlie temporary mains would be unnecessary, and that- a small pumping plant would furnish all the water requisite to the erection of the building. On being subjected to a test, however, it was found that the spring was not of sufficient volume to meet the builders' requirements, and it was decided to proceed with the laying of the pipe lines. On tlie completion of this work the first- steps in laying the foundations will be taken and thereafter the work will bo pushed on with all expedition.
