HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. [PER PREBS ASSOCIATION.} WELLINGTON, Jan. 15. The High Commissioner’s cable, dated London, January 13, states : Mutton: The market is not much changed. The tendency is slightly in favor of buyers. Canterbury is nominally at 4£d per lb, North Island 4Jd. The lamb market is very quiet as the result of heavy arrivals. Australian Argentine 4}d. Nine thousand carcases of New Zealand have arrived, and are selling at 51d. The beef market is very firm, but is affected by the uncertainty regarding the Argentine strike. Supplies are decreasing. New Zealand hindquarters 3Jd, forequarters 3d. The butter market is very firm. The demand for spot is good, also for that to arrive. The average price for the week for choicest New Zealand is 1355, Australian 1325, Argentine 131 s, Danish 1395. The arrivals of butter during Decemlrer totalled 5000 tons less than in December last. The imports of butter into the United Kingdom during December, 1910, amounted to 21,141 tons. The cheese market is very firm. There a general and active demand. The market shows signs of strength. The average price for the week for choicest New Zealand cheese per cwt is 73s 6d. The arrivals of cheese during December amounted to 3500'tons less than in December of last year. The imports of cheese into the United Kingdom during December. 1910, amounted to 10,419 tons. The hemp market remains firm. It has been favorably affected by the Mexican Government’s fiscal agreement. New Zealand, good to fair grade, on spot, £22; New Zealand, good to fair grade, £2l; forward shipment at the same price; fair current Manila, £23. The output from Manila for the week was 27,000 bales. The wheat market is quiet. New Zealand long-berried wheat, on spot ex granary, per quarter of 4961b5, is at 35s 6d; short-berried wheat, 365. Oats are in good ’demand. For all descriptions the supply falls short of the demand. New Zealand oats, short sparrow-bills, ox granary, on spot, per quarter of 3841b5, 24s 6d; Danish, per quarter of 3201b5, 20s. The cocksfoot seed market is very firm. The wool market is very firm. Mutton and lamb: River Plate shipments received during December, 1911, were—London, 59,481 carcases mutton, 42,288 carcases lamb; Liverpool, 186,883 and 82.819; Hull, GOO and 328; Newcastle, 18,397 and 2700; Southampton, 7567 and 320; Cardiff, 6553 and nil; totals, 284,851 and 128,465. Weddel and Co.’s annual report of the frozen meat trade states that there is no prospect of any increase of supplies from home herds and flocks, nor the ; likelihood of large increases in Australia I and New Zealand. Prices can hardly 1 fail to be maintained in 1912, unless Argentina floods the market with chilled meat. ’
