SUNDAY TRADING. [pep press association.] DUNEDIN, Jan. 15. At the Police Court this morning, Charles Bulwer, shopkeeper, was fined 5s and costs on a charge of Sunday trading, having sold soft drinks in view of a public place. The defendant, who was a. fish and supper-room proprietor, had also sold other articles, which were supplied to be taken away. CHEMISTS FINED. Alfred T. Price, C. TV. Hawkins, and Alfred Cudaille, chemists, were fined, the two former £5 and the latter £lO, on a charge of failing to enter in .a book particulars relating to the purchase of opium. DOMINION PROHIBITION. WELLINGTON, Jan. 15. A meeting of the Grand Lodge Executive of the International Order of Good Templars passed a resolution that the first meeting of the Board, since the poll, desired to place on record the magnificent vote in favor of Dominion prohibition at the recent poll, and desired to draw attention to the fact that an absolute majority of votes -was cast m favor of prohibition. The meeting further urged temperance workers to call upon the new Parliament to. amend the licensing law in favor of the bare majority. DEFENCE SCHEME. WELLINGTON, Jan. 15. To correct any. impression which may exist that a whole year’s training wifi be expected of territorial forces during the remainder of the coming year ending May 31st, General Godley explained to-day that only a proportion of the year’s drills and. exercises will be expected up to that date. Artillery camps begin in'February. Many infantry regiments will camp before the end of March. The mounted l rifles camp in April, and May. General Godley remarked that more cadet officers were wanted. Officers commanding districts will be glad to hear of any suitable officers or qualified persons willing to become senior cadet officers. He regarded the registration of both territorials and senior cadets as eminently satisfactory. UNITARIAN CONFERENCE, TIMARU, Jan. 15. Tlie Rev. Chappie and Mr G. Wells, secretary of the Tima.ru Unitarian Conference, have been appointed to attend the Unitarian Conference at Auckland .next month. ABSCONDING SEAMEN. Four seamen who absconded from the steamer Clan MacLaren (now on her way to Auckland) were arrested in the country and were remanded to Wellington. WEATHER IN SOUTH CANTERBURY. The long spell of dull showery vfather which was responsible for 1.73 inches of rain this month gave place to-day to a hot drying nor’-wester. Bright dry weather is needed to ripen the crops' and put substance into the grasses, which are too soft to fatten lambs properly.
