A SAD ACCIDENT.

RAILWAY PORTER KILLED. AN EX-GISBORNE MAN. ESPECIAL TO TIMES .1 NAPIER, Jan. 17. An accident which terminated fatally occurred at Port Ahuriri this morning. 'A married man named Frank Hargreaves, about 24 years of age, and previously in Gisborne, employed as a porter in the Railway Department, was engaged in shunting operations. When he was standing on the rear of an empty truck, in order to slip two tim-ber-laden vehicles, he rose from a stooping position and struck his head on some projecting timber from the* next truck, the blow causing him to rail to the ground- The following truck was •on top of him immediately, and gave the unfortunate man no opportunity to save himself. The left wheel passed over his right forearm, cutting off his hand clean. The wheel then passed over his right thigh and down his log, almost severing the foot and tearing his hoot and sock off. Hargreaves was draped along the track for about nrteen yards before the last truck got clear. Eye-ewitnesse of the sad occurrence immediately went to Hargreaves assistance, and in addition to his other injuries discovered that he had receiv- • ed a nasty cut several inches long on •fche left cheek, also tihafc from his downwards was frightfully mangled, both the leg and hi- bones protruding. Hargreaves, who was quite conscious, was removed to Williams and Kettle s store to await medical assistance, and stated to the Port stationmaster (Mr*A. R. Williams) that the occurrence was purely an accident. On the arrival of Dr Bernau the injured man was at once removed in the borough ambulance to the hospital, where be died at 3 p.m. Hargreaves was a married man with one child, and bad been in the railway service just over twelve months, and was employed as a porter and railway shunter. He was very active and. willing and was showing such promise as a shunter that early promotion for him was expected. Mrs. Hargreaves is at present in a precarious state of health, and much sympathy will be felt for her in her time of trouble.
