(Received Jan. 17, 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 17. At the wool sales 9314 bales were offered. There was a capital selection, and a large attendance ensured spirited competition, chiefly from Yorkshire and German spinners. Since our last circular the auctions have passed off with good spirit, and strong competition. The market has been firm, with a hardening tendency, and it is expected that tlie sales will close with a strong tone The best combing merinos in o-rease have sold fully up to prices current at the close of the last sales, while medium wools have occasional!} been a shade dearer. Inferior grease has shown very little change. Among scoureds, m-

ferior faulty wools—which were comparatively cheap last sales—have advanced 71 per. cent., and good to superior wools have ruled from par to 5 per cent, dearer: Medium wools, have advanced about 5 per cent. Crossbreds have met with very strong competition. Fiue and medium grensies have sold freely at 5 to 71 per cent, advance, and where American competition lias been secured for these descriptions, the improvement liars been even more. Coarse, greasies liavo ruled from par to 5 per cent, dearer. Scoured crossbreds, especially New Zealands, have also improved their position. For some of the fine half-bred wools, prices have shown an advance of 71 to 10 per cent, since the opening. These wools were somewhat neglected at the SeptemberOctober sales. Slipes have been in good request at prices 5 per cent, for coarse, and 71 per cent, for medium to fine descriptions, above last sales’ rates. LAND SALES. Messrs. Traill Bros, and Co. report the following property sales during the past month:—On account of Mr. Tattley, section in Russell Street at £165; on account of Mr. J. C. Nisbot, section Childers Road £125, and a house and half-acre for same owner £800; on account of Mr. Frcrichs, section in Childers Road for £125, and to Mr. Casey the adjoining section for £130; on account of Miss Gardner, house in Childers Road £340, section Russell Street to Mr. Richards £155, two sections Upper Childers Road to Mr. T. Spence for £245; on account of Mr. Bushnell, section Aberdeen Road for £250; on account of Mrs. Neild, section Disraeli Street for £1225, section Russell Street to Mr. W. Graham for £155; on account of Mrs. Tloultham, two corner sections Mangapapa £290, section Russell Street to Mr. Porter £155; five acres and house, Fox Street, on account Black Bros., £2150; acre Upper Gladstone Road to Mr. Hollands for £850; on account of Mr. Robertson. one acre, Russell Street, to Mr. Graham,, £500; on account of Mr. E. P. Williams, section Desmond Road £9O; on account Mr. D. O’Dwver, section Desmond Road £105; the lease and goodwill of Tatapouri Hotel to Mr. R. Snell; a block of five acres. Fox Street, sold to Mr J. L. Spence for £2350; on account of Mr. Spence, house and half-acre Waiteata Street £S00; section Childers Road to Mrs Easterbrook £155, and section Queen Street to same purchaser £135; section Childers Road to Mr. H. J. Gandy £155. Messrs. Traill Bros, report a brisk demand for properties on Whataupoko and Childers Road, and also for smaller houses near town.
