GISBORNE BAND CONTEST.
MEETING OF EXECUTIVE
A largely attended .meeting of the executive appointed to carry out tho approaching Band Contest was held in the Cosmopolitan Club last evening. Mr AY. Pettie (chairman) presided. The secretary (Air Jus. Chrisp) reporter! that Mr J. AY. J. Preston, manager of the Union S.S. Company, was communicating with his head office with o v i(vw to delaying the boat which arrived on the (Saturday before the contest until the Sunday. Four bands were arriving from the south, and by delaying the boat until tlie Sunday those would be much convenienccd. Mr Preston was sanguine that the boat could be clelaved. It was also- reported that All- 1L J. Dav stationmaster, had intimated his willingness to do all in his power to assist the committee in the way of special trains and reduced; fares. It was decided to appoint custodians at each hall where the various bands were quartered, and to arrange practice rooms for each band. The Mayor undertook to see that the Council Chambers would be available for the annual mooting of the Brass Bands’ Association, which was to be held during the contest. Tho matter of erecting staging at the Park and AUetoria Domain and providing seating accommodation was left in the hands of the ground committee. . The ground committee were also- empowered to attend to the providing of marquees for the judge; officials, and bands at the grounds.. Majors A. G. Beero and 0, HoUier Evans were appointed a military committee, with power to add to their number, to make arrangements for judging the Quickstep competition. . Messrs AL L. Foster and AYobster were appointed judges of instruments. The appointment of a shorthand writer and tvpnst and accompanist was left in the hands of tire chairman and secretary. Tlie chairman intimated that it was probable that\ A r ict-oria Domain would be lighted by electricity from tlie borough power house on the nights on which it was used for the contest. On tli-:.' motion of the lion, secretary, a he artv vote of thanks was passed to Messrs R. Smith and Co., of London, for forwarding a march for the massed bands to play. A vote of thanks was also passed to Air AY. Lane, of Hastings, for the donation of a silver-plated cornet for the winner of the cornet solo. Season tickets are obtainable from Messrs AY. Miller, T. Adams, A. A. Fromm, C. Aluir, Chas. Adair and members of the executive.
