RACEHORSE THAT WON OVER £50,000.

FOAL OF A MARK THAT USED TO DRAW A DOGCART.

In the annals of Turf history the name of Isinglass, the famous horse, who died suddenly at Chievely Park, Newmarket, is writ large. He was foaled in 1890, his sire being Isonomy and his mother Deadlock, a mare who once worked in the shafts of a dog-cart. In four years (in the last of which he only ran once) lie won the record sum of £57,455 for his millionaire owner, the late Mr Harry McCalmont, being only once beaten. He won his first race, as a two-year-old, in the Maiden Plate of 200 sovs, at the Newmarket Second Spring Meeting, and this success he followed lip by securing the New Stakes, worth 2006 sovs, at Ascot, and the Middle Park Plate, value 2375 sovs. As a tliree-year-old Isinglass gained the greatest honor that can bo credited to a racehorse—mamely, the “triple crown,” winning the Two Thousand Guineas, the Derby, and St. Loger. In the same year lie was .also credited with the valuable Newmarket Stakes, but in the Lancashire Plate at Manchester, conceding 10lb, lie had to be content with second place to Raeburn, this being his only reverse. Among the races won in 1894 were the Princess of Wales’s Stakes, valued L 0,911 sovs; the Eclipse Stakes, 9285 bovs ; and the Jockey Club Stakes, L 1,302 sovs. • _ ' In 1895 Isinglass only carried silk once—namely, in the Ascot Gold Cup of 3000 sovs, which he won in a canter. The great horse had also a sticcessful career at the stud, though he failed to sire anything as good as himself. None of liis stock won the Derby, though his son Louviers was only beaten a short head for it by Minoru in 1909. His daughter, Cherry Lass, won the One Thousand Guineas and Oaks in 1905, airl Glass Doll was successful in the Oaks two years afterwards. Among other good horses to claim him as sire were Rising Glass, St. Veles, Vain Duchess, Glass Jug, Haiti nglass, Challenger, Kilglass, Admirable Crichton, etc. Of these, Rising Glass ran second to Ard Patrick for the Derby and to Sceptre for the St. Lcgor of 1902. In all, Isinglass’s descendants have won 279 laces and •€148,514 Los in stake money.
