LECTURESHIPS AND COMMERCE.
AN IMPORTANT DEPARTURE
[per press association.] WELLINGTON, Jan- 24
An important new departure was resolved upon by the Victoria College Council to-night, when it was decided (definitely to establish lectureships in commerce, one in accountancy subjeets, and the other in such legal subjects as are required, of candidates for the Bachelor of Commerce degree. Some time ago the Council considered the question of establishing the lectureships, but nothing could then be done, owing to financial considerations. Now, however. these have been overcome by a generous subsidy from the New Zealand Society of Accountants, and the Council was thus enabled to take action. The Council received a report from the sub-committee appointed to interview the applicants for lectureships, and subsequently made the following appointments, each tenable for the year 1912. Lecturer in commercial subjects, J. S. Barton, at a salary of £250 per annum; lecturer in legal subjects, W. F- Ward, at a salary of £IOO per annum. A new 1 research scholarship in physics was allotted by the Council to Mr. M- Alexander, B.Sc of Otago University)- The ben ol airship, which is worth £IOO per annum, is due t|a the generosity of a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.
