THE TOTE COMMISSION.
CHRISTCHURCH SITTINGS CONCLUDED.
[per press association.,] CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 25. The New South Wales Totalisator Commission concluded its Christchurch sitting to-day. Mr. L. M. Isitt, M.P., the first witness, opposed the totalisator on the ground that it increased the volume of betting, -especially in the country districts. The Totalisator had not accomplished what its supporters claimed for it, and bookmaking was still rampant. His own business—bookselling—was prejudicially affected, the trade falling off remarkably after a big race meeting. The Rev. R. S. Gray took a similar view. He said he opposed betting in all forms, and when the liquor question was off their hands the moral reformers would turn their attention to this question.
Messrs W. H. MacDougall, totalisator- proprietor, R. 0. Duncan, and C. R. Woledge gave evidence in support of the totalisator, Mr Duncan putting in the statement made by the late Mr. G. G. Stead some years ago.
