[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Jan. 2S
At yesterday’s sitting of the University Senate Dr. Hight moved “lhat a candidate for the degree or Doctor of Literature or Doctor of Science, or Doctor of Laws, be required to publish his thesis or dissertation before it is accepted by the University ; that the published thesis or dissertation be first submitted to the teachers of the subject concerned in affiliated colleges, ;.nd except upon'the receipt of an unfavorable report from them the .Senate shall submit the work to an examiner who is a specialist in the subject, of the thesis.” The motion, which was seconded and supported by Mr G. Hogben, was carried without dissent, and referred to the statutes committee. Tile joint medical and finance committees asked by tlie Senate to reconsider the rates of remuneration for examination reported that no change is at present advisable. The report was adopted. Further consideration of the recess committee on engineering and architecture was given bv the Senate. Professor J. R. Scott (Canterbury College) in moving the adoption of the report, expressed the -belief that this revised programme would prevent the establishment of inferior schools of engineering in other parts of the Dominion. Tins must inevitably result in the lowering of the standard and influence, not for the good of the Canterbury school. There was room for only one such institution in New Zealand. Ihe motion was seconded by Mr G. llegben. Hie several clauses of the report were taken seriatim and adopted. The report was referred to the Statutes Committee.
