A PRISONER’S DEATH

[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, Jan. 27.

A man named Edward Kirby, a prisoner from Mount Eden gaol, died in the hospital under circumstances considered to warrant a coronial inquiry. He was serving a sentence of seven years’ hard labor, and had. been incarcerated since 1908. He is said to have suffered from miners’ complaint. IRONSAND INDUSTRY. NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan, 27. Active steps are to be taken at once in connection with the ironsand industry here. A syndicate, holding a lease from the Harbor Board, intend placing a plant and material on the ground immediately, in terms of the lease, qnder which the syndicate forfeit £2OOO unless improvements to that value are effected by March 31. PRISONERS WHO ESCAPED. WELLINGTON, Jan. 27. Arthur Thomas Reid and George Armitage, who escaped from the prison gang at Mount 'Cook on anniversaay day, appeared at the Magistrates Court yesterday. Armitage, who is 18 years old, is serving a sentence of three years’ reformative treatment for breaking and entering, and he was simply eonvicted. Reid, who is 32 years old, and serving a sentence of two years’ imprisonment on fourteen charges of breaking and entering, was ordered re be kept on bread and water for two days and to forfeit one month’s- marks. BUTTER UP. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 27. The price of butter locally has been raised one penny per pound!, and factory butter is quoted at fifteen pence The reason is stated to be the high prices ruling for butter for export. CANARY SHOW. The fifth annual show of the Christchurch Canary Cage Bird dub was heldi to-day. There were some particularly fine specimens of Norwich and Yorkshire birds shown. Mr G. H. Broughs in Norwich huffs, won the best bird 1 competition in the Norwich section, and also won a gold medal and cup for the best bird in the show. Mr T. H. Henderson won two cups for the best Yorkshire in the chow.
