THE POPE AND PORTUGAL.
EXPULSION OF A PATRIARCH,
EMBARRASING SITUATION
CREATED
ROME, Jan. 19. It is learned from a high. Vatican authority that the Pope lias been oreatly embarrassed by the recent expulsion of the Patriarch of Lisbon for a number of years. . The Holy Father’s dilemma is due to the fact that at the late Consisroiy he made the Patriarch of Lisbon a Cardinal in Pectore, which signifies that the name of the new Cardinal is being withheld until its announcement could be made at a more opportune time. The Pontiff thought that this would, be regarded as evidence of his good faith, “and. that it would prove lus desire to live up to the concordat. The whole situation. however, has been changed by the action of the Portuguese authorities in issuing the decree of banishment against the patriarch, and is now doubtful if the latter will ever be elevated to the feacred College.
