NATIVE LAND PRESIDENCY. [per press ASSOCIATIONJ WELLINGTON, Feb. 8. Mr J- B. Jack has resigned the pre : sidency of the Akaroa. District Maori Land Board. Mr C. T. H. BroAvn, ot Wellington, has been appointed to succeed Mr Jack, and to be a Commissioner of the Native Land Court. Mr C. E. McCormick has been appointed a judge of the High Court of the Cook Islands. ILLEGAL GAMBLING. AUCKLAND, Feb. 8. At the Police Court to-day, Mr Cutten gave reserved judgment in the cases of Jas. Ernest McCarthy and Joseph Brown, aa-lio Avere charged Avitli betting at Ellerslie on January 1, in vieAV of persons frequenting the racecourse. Both AA-ere convicted and fined £2O each. FOUND IN THE RIVERAUCKLAND, Feb. 8. News lias been recereed a t Huntly to the effect that the body of a man Avas Sound in the river at Foster’s Island. Identity is at present unknown. The police are investigating.
