LOSING HIGH OFFICIALS. [PER PE.ESS ASSOCIATION.O WELLINGTON, Feb. 9. The Civil Service is losing an unusually large number of its high officers this year. Already the resignations on superannuations of Messrs W. C. Kensington (Under-Secretary for Hinds). H. F. Waldegrave (Under-Secretary for the International Affairs Department) have been made public, and 1 two more important retirements arc imminent. Probably during the ,present year the general manager of railways (Air 'l'. Ronayne) will exercise his right of retirement upon superannuation. He lias been ,36 years in the service, his first position on the New Zealand railways being in charge of the Helensville branch. He was in charge at Greymouth, and made the first shipment of coal from that port m 1876, and in January, 1895. upon the Government taking over control of the railways, from Commissioners, lie was appointed to his present position, which carries now a salary of £1250 per annum. Air Ronayne is entitled to a retiring allowance of £SOO per annum. Another prominent officer of the Railway Department, Air A. L. Beattie, has announced his intention of retiring shortly. He obtained, his experience in railway engineering in England, and entered the New Zealand railways service 34 years ago in Ot:\go. In 1896 he became chief mechanical engineer, an important position carrying a salary of £9OO per annum. Air Beattie will be entitled to a superannuation allowance of £SOO per annum. At tile request of the Government. Mr Kensington (Under-Secretarv of Lands) will not retire until March 31st, when he will be granted three months' leave of absence. Air Waldegrave also retires on that date, with three months’ leave. •
