ON THE VARIOUS BANDS

The judge made the following notes in regal’d to th evarious contests E FLAT SOPRANO SOLO. Maximum points 50. “Bravo, Bravo, Don Pasquale.” A Leatherby, Whangarei Municipal.— Tempo di valse allegro moderato e bnllante. Very fiat at opening, in fact very much out of tune: not sure of his notes in bar 8: trill and rail very fairly managed: bar 31 wrongly phrased: tone not sufficiently bright: accents at 38 and 39 not sufficiently marked: trill at 36 and 37 very nicely done: split top Gr at bar 54: < at 71 verv indistinct here: omitted bar 85. This performance has been much marred owing to the player not having tuned his instrument properly. (36 IK B Ut Bo water, Palmerston North—Tone i somewhat thick and indistinct. btyle too mechanical: not strictly m tune: bai 18 wrongly phrased: not sure ot Ins notes at 20 ■ A at bar 31 very flat: accents nicely marked at 38 and 39: also at 45: improving from 54 on, though still out ot tune slightly rail at 64 and 65 well managed first valve notes very much out ot tune. Westport Garrison.—Opening slightly out of tune: tone very faiin bottom D out of tune at bar 8: trill at 1/ very well managed: from 23 and on playing much better in tune: tone also improving: C’s out of tune at 41: trill at 46 and 47 well managed: not sure ot Ins notes at 55: 1 do not like tlie reading ot tlie rallentando bars at 18 and 65. Not quite sure of bis Gat 78. On the whole a very fair performance. (39 points.) F C. Wilkinson, Gisborne City.—G son second line a little out of tune: tone very fair, 'style likewise: faltered slightly at commencement of trill at bar 17: nevertheless very fairly managed: rail at 31 very well managed: accents well marked at 38 and on: from 54 playing much better in tune now: failed at So and ok: nevertheless a very fair performance: best in tune so far; also best tone. (40 points.) W. Summers, Wanganui City—Opens a shade out of tune: tone very fair though it should be a little brighter: rail at lv and 18 very well managed : from 18 to 31 very nicely played: accents at 42 and 43 not* sufficiently marked: nevertheless he is playing very nicely: ral lat 64 and oo very well managed: best in tone so far: most correct intonation so far: a very nice performance. W Combie, Waihi Federal—Opens with very fair tone: style fair: bar 16 not a success: playing with very fair expression : intonation very fair indeed; faltered slightly at trill in bar 48: at 63 missed second C sharp: this player has infused a little sympathy into his performance. Excepting for one or two slight mistakes has given a very nice performance. (42 points: second.)

E FLAT EUPHONIUM. Maximum points 50. “Blow, Blow, thou AVinter AA r ind." J. Elder. Masterton Municipal.—Not strictly in tune at bar 3: very much out of tune in bar 8: style somewhat; mechanical: style not quite correct: this player should cultivate a more legato style of plaving: tone very fair: 33 out of tune slightly: marks of expression from 45 to 50 properly observed: ad lib at 59 not a success: he should infuse more life into his playing at the risoluto: 81 much out of tune': a moderately good performance. Gray, AVanganui City—Opens with nice tone, and is playing with very nice expression : A out of tune at bar 15: bar 22 wronglv phrased: faltered slightly at first D at 'bar 29: from 51 to 60 very nicelv played indeed: risnloto well managed : on the whole a very nice performance. McCaskill, AA r estport Garrison. — Opens with fair tone though style somewhat disjointed: F at bar 16 not strictly in tune: at 29 and 31 style not sufficiently legato: style is too measured, should play with greater freedom: intonation faulty at the risuloto, and tone a little hard in qualitv: bar 74 not a success: 81 slightly out of tune: a very fair performance. Harris, Gisborne City.—Opens with nice tone and is playing with nice expression : is phrasing very nicely: is playing nicely in tune in good style: marks of expression properly observed: ad lib at 59 very well managed: the risnloto is receiving proper treatment at the hands of this player: intonation veiy correct: bar 87, the quaver should be played a little broader: taken as a whole a very good performance. Harvey, Palmerston North. —Opens too boisterously: tone too hard and somewhat coarse: piu lento played too pointedly: intonation faulty at 13 and 14: F much out of tune at 16: in fact the intonation is very faulty: cres at 47 very well managed : style not sufficiently legato from bar 51 and on: phrasing very fair indeed: tone from 83 and on much too coarse m quality: this performance has been somewhat marred by overblowing: a moderately good performance. O' Mills, AVaihi Federal— Opens with verv nice tone: playing-ylith nice expression and the intonation i:Vfaj,rly correct; dim at 31 well managed: OLo ad lib at 32: cres at 47 well maTLag’etS F sharps at, 65 and 66 a shade out ot tune: plaj ing with nice tone though not c/uite so rich in quality as that of No. 4 player. On the whole a very good performance. (44 points: second.) . . A. E. Fulljames, Whangarei Municipal. —Opens witii nice tone playing with fiair style: intonation a shade faulty at bar 7: pui lento well managed: did not give minim its full value at bar 16: 1 s at bar 25 not strictly in tune: playing very nicely nevertheless, and with nice expression :' 35 to 41 very well played indeed: 4 at 50 a shade out of tune: ad lib at o J well managed: phrasing very nicely at the risoluto, also is observing marks of

expression properly: ad lib at 75 splendidly rendered: quite the correct style here: iD at 89 slightly out of tune: another very good performance. (43, points.) ]?, Leader, Gisborne City—Opens with fair tone: intonation faulty at 7 and 8: took breath at bar. 15: this is wrong: playing with very fair tone and with nice expression, though licit 'strictly in tune; Dim at 31 well managed: At 33 too sharp: Fs in first snace much out of tune: bar 57 wrongly phrased: Risouoto played just a little- too tamely: a moderately good performance (36 points). A. A. Whiting, Wanganui City—Faltered slightly on A bar ai 6:, one just a little litircl in quality: too loud at pui lento: intonation a little faulty: F much out of tune at bar 1C: out of tune at 31 and 32: Cres at 47 very fairly managed: the same remark applies to the, Risoluto: it is a pity that the intonation is faulty which is marring what would otherwise be a good performance: from 83 to end of solo very well managed: On the whole a very fair performance. (37 points.)

Opens with nice tone: Cadenza very nicely played: Solo -Con tenerezza. split G slightly at bar 11: 15 to 17 very nicely played: Quaver at 22 too short: same remark applies to bar 25: nevertheless is playing very nicely: pui mosso, bar 8 quaver D just a little too short: veloce very fairly played nevertheless. Tempo Imo, cadenza very fairly played: solo tenerezza, playing very nicely here though style a little stiff: quavers at 19 and 21 too short: pin mosso very fairly played : con abbandona not: sufficient force here, this should be played with violence so to speak: cadenza very fairly played indeed: last note slightly out of tune: on the whole a very fair performance. Gisborne City.—Opens with nice full tone: though just a little hard in quality: cadenza well played: con tenerezza, style somewhat mechanical: faltered slightly on Gs at bar 16: last note bar 22 , too short: very fairly played nevertheless. Rail well managed, also Veloce: Tempo Imo.. faltered slightly on C, in cadenza, nevertheless very well played indeed: solo tenerezza, playing with nice expression and good tone: Dolcess managed well, also poco agitato: pui mosso. stentando not observed: cadenza very well played: on the whole a very tuneful performance. Boyd, Wanganui City.—Opens with nice tone: cadenza splendidly played: con tenerezza. mecca staccato at 8 not properly observed: playing with splendid tone and with due appreciation of the subject under treatment: very well played indeed: piu mosso, including cadenza splendidly played: quite a treat this: Tempo Imo : cadenza splendidly rendered: this is evidently a soloist: tenerezza. bar 7 wrongly phrased: best tone so far: dolcess well managed, also poco. agitato: piu mosso receiving proper treatment at the hands of this player: con abbandona very fairly managed : cadenza very well played : very fine performance indeed: it-has given me great pleasure to listen to this performance. B FLAT BASS SOLO. “Qui Toll is” —Maximum points 50. Booker, Palmerston North.—Andante, not strictly • in tune: tone very.fair: indistinct articulation at 10: much out of tune at 14: also from 17 to 20: split F at 25: G not a success at 28: style too mechanical: 33 to 38 very fairly played indeed: 1 24 split F: still out of tune: 50 to 53 very fairly played: turn at 56 not a success: intonation a little faulty in first cadenza, otherwise very fairly played : pin mosso. second cadenza moderately well played: this performance has been marred by incorrect intonation. (30 points.) C. > Clayton, Gisborne City.—Andante faltered slightly at B bar 3: playing with nice tone and expression: split 1) slightly at bar 13: intonation very good so far: bar 29 quite a success: this is a severe test in intonation: playing very nicely indeed: turn too hurried at. 56: should be played a little slower: first cadenza very well played: though I do not quite agree with the phrasing: breath ' should have been taken after the second pause note, instead of before it: second cadenza vei - y well played: a very good performance indeed. (46 points, first.) A Shepherd, Wanganui City.—Andante: opens with very fair tone, though not quite so well in tune as the last player: first valve notes not srictly in tune: out of tune at C sharps at bar 14: bar 16 to 20 very well played indeed: 29 very fairly managed: from here he is playing much better in tune: at 45 and 46 D slightly out of tune: 54 not a success: first cadenza very feirly played indeed: pin mosso. second cadenza very fairly played though I do not, agree with the phrasing of same: on the whole a very nice performance. (43 points: second.)

E FLAT BASS SOLO. “Heav’n in Prayer, Thine aid I seek.” and “Good subjects.of Brabant, r tis well!” (From Lohengrin). , . Maximum points 50. E. A. Pany Whangarei.—Andante Maestoso. Qpens with fair tone though a little hard in quality: intonation fairly

correct: from 1 to 30 very fairly played indeed: Molto Sos: marks of expression properly observed: very nicely played: Allegro Brillante. Bar 4 minim made too short: B sharp at 28 slightly out of tune: Ds at 38 and 39 a,little out of tune: on the whole a very fair performance. (44 points). M. Codyre, • Westport Garrison. —Andante Maestoso. Opens with nice rich tone and playing with nice expression: Bottom G at 15 a Tittle shaky: from 1 to 29 very nicely played: Molto Sos: a little out of tune at 46 and 47 ;■ faltered slightly at 54: very nicely played: Allegro Brillante: very nicely played. (47 points: second). J. Baxter .Waihi Federal. —Unsteady on first note: intonation a little faulty on several bars: playing rather tamely: not sufficient expression: marks properly observed: but devoid of nuance and rytlim not sufficiently marked: Gs at 52 and 53 a shade flat: from 56 and on marks of expression not properly observed: tone very nice nevertheless: very fairly played: Allegro Brillaiite. 28 B snarp out of tune: at 38 D out of tune: on the whole a very fair performance. (46 points). C. Webster, Gisborne City.—Andante Maestoso. Tone very fair: a little out of tune at bar 13: stylo should be a little more legato: from 1 to 30 very fairly played: Molto Sostenuto. No distinction, made between P at 31 and PP at 35: Rythm not well marked: treatment a little too heavy in. the softer portions: nevertheless very fairly played: Allegro Brillante: at 22 accent not sufficiently marked: intonation a little faulty in places: nevertheless on the whole a good performance. Opens with very fair tone indeed: a shade out of tune at bar 8: does not sustain bis notes sufficiently: split C bar 20: 21 to 30 very fairly played: Molto Sos. not sufficient distinction between P at 31 and PP at 35: G at bar 51 a little unsteady: from 56 to 72 very nicely played: Allegro Brillante. F at 25 a little too short: 37 and 38 not a success: on the whole very well played. (45 points.) F Meath, Waihi Federal. —Andante Maestoso. Out of tune at bar 2: faltered on A at bar 7: first G in bar 15 should bo broader: style somewhat stiff and mechanical: tone very fair: Molto Sos. PP well managed, though slightly out of tune at bars 15, 46 and 47: from 50 to end very well played: Allegro Brillante. Bar 6 split B minim: not sufficient tonal graduation here: nevertheless very fairly played. (43 points.) F. Tunnicliffe, AVanganui City. Andante Maestoso, tone very fair at opening: at S attack of note out of tune but instantly recovered: style much too stiff: has a tendency to push his notes, and this should be played in a broader style, and with more expression: Molto 80s. playing is much better here, though out of tune at 46 and 47: also at 49 on G sharp: at 57 and on minims not sufficiently sustained: should be played much broader, otherwise rendering is very good here: very fairly played.
