A SAFE ANÆSTHE IC.

RISK OF DEATH REDt-CED TO NIL IN CHLOROFORM ADMINISTRATION. Dr Gwathmay, anaesthetist- at the Skin and Cancer Hospital in New York, has discovered a new method or administering chloroform and ether, reducine: the risk of dentil to ml* nucl eliminating the after nausea in JO per cent of the cases. i'i-e method, which has recently been mad in 6000 cases in a number of hospitals throughout the country, consists in passing the anaesthetic tiivough water warmed slightly over blood heat ' before administering it to the patient. ■ This is accomplished by a simple appari atus operated by a foot pump. | The* water removes certain luipuri- ! ties, mainly aldehyde, which tend to i cause nausea, whilst the anaesthetic, i being of the temperature of the body when inhaled, does not- cause any shock to the system as produced by the old method of breathing cold ether and chloroform. Dr Gwathmay says that an infant of three days old can safely be anaesthetised, while all patients can be made completely unconscious in five minutes without seriously affecting the kidneys, heart or lungs.
