GISBORNE SCHOOL

For the first time this year the Gisborne School Committee met on, Friday night. Present: Per. L. 1). IjJP' mas (chairman), Mesclames H- J. 'Vinker and J. East, Eev, XV. Grant, Dr. Porter, Messrs CL Smith, H. Clayton, G. Wildish, AY. Coleman, and b. JRowley (headmaster). A quantity of correspondence- on. various matters cf dealt was dealt with. The action of the Ai orks Committee in giving Mr AA’ilson permission to connect with the school drain on certain conditions was endorsed, as was the action of the Bath Committee in allowing tlie bandsmen to use the school hath. The Headmaster reported: —- “The school re-opened after midsummer vacation on Monday, February sth, and was reorganised in accord-ance-with the results of the annual exam<iniation. The number oif chdclren admitted (70) was somewhat smaller than usual; on the other hand a larger number than usual left, Standard A I. being an exceptionally large class - in consequence the roll (767) is smaller now tlian. at the end of the year. The average attendance for the past fortnight has been 690. Miss Cumming has not been present this year, having applied to the Board of Education for leave of absence. The additional -1011 of linoleum for wall blackboards, promised by the secretary of the Board, of Education, has not been sent nor has any explanation of this been received by" me. By direction of- the bath committee I gave an invitation to visiting bandsmen to use the school bath free. A number have availed themselves of the privilege. Among them was Mr Penhall instructor in swimming in several ‘baths in XX'anganui. He was good enough to take a class of boys and one of girls, and explain to us the methods he adopts in teaching. By direction of our chairman the school was closed yesterday afternoon, to_ enable the children to attend the quick-step competition. I have to report the destruction by fire of the school boundary, and damage to several trees in the plantation. A portion of the Technical School building was also damaged by fire, through the contractor's tartank boiling over. This damage has boon repaired.” In their report the Finance Committee stated the total cost of asphalting the school grounds was £75 ps sd. They recommended that application be made to the Board for £32 3s 8d due to the committee, as balance of subsidy of £75. Accounts amounting to £65 os 8d were recommended for payment. Three tenders had been received for the supply of stationery to the school, and the committee recommended that Air T. Adams' (the lowest tender') be accepted. The recommendations were adopted. A report was also received from the A'isiting Committee, stating that they liad examined the playground and found everything to be in a satisfactory condition. It was decided to ask the Board to erect a bicycle shed. A vote of thanks was passed to Air Penhall, swimming instructor, of AA'anganui, who is visiting Gisborne for the band contest, for the time he had spent in holding a swimming class for girls and boys during his short stay. AIAXCAPAPA SCHOOL. The usual meeting of the Alangapapa School Committee was held on Friday night, when a small quantity of routine business was dealt with. An application from the Turanga Fete committee for the school to he given a holiday on February 29 was refused. Accounts amounting to £l2 09s were ordered to be paid.
