NAPIER NEWS.

FEARS FOR A RESERVOIR. (SPECIAL TO TIMES.] NAPIER, Feb. 20. The question of the safety of a reservoir in Cameron Road having been raised in connection with the erection of the Municipal Theatre at the foot of the hill, a representative of the Telegraph yesterday visited the large tank in company with Mr. A. Liddy (architect), who'made an inspection of Hill-' side and the storage tank at the top. Mr Liddy’s opinion is that absolutely no danger is threatened to the theatre or any other building near it even if the reservoir did burst. The tank stands well back from the brow of the hill, and is sunk several feet into the hill in addition to having an old concrete wall in front, which would have the effect of breaking the force of any stream coming from the tank. , RECLAMATION WORK. The Haijbor Board to-day decided to take over that portion of the Wliareomarenui reclamation work on the south side of the Tutaekuri river from the syndicate, on conditions that suitable arrangements were made with the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union and Mr J. Beatson to hand over their leases, the price paid to the syndicate to be £13,000 in debentures bearing five per cent, interest and redeemable in nine years, and the payment of £4OOO cash within twelve months from the date of the transfer, March 1, 1912. Jt is understood that the Hawke s Bay Rugby Union, which is the lesses of Logan Park, will not surrender that property except on conditions that the liabilities incurred by the Union in connection therewith (£2100) are taken over by the svndicate. This proposal has not been “ accepted, and the matter is to be further considered between the parties concerned, but it is not expected that the football people will give way short of their proposal. A TELEPHONE COMPLAINT. Further developments are expected in replv to the protest against the inadequacy of the telephone service between Napier and Dannevirke. The secretary of the Postal and Telegraph Department has replied to the Napier Chamber of Commerce stating that the service will be much improved shortly by the removal of through circuits. Extra facilities would be provided as far as Waipawa and as soon as the through lines could be removed from the local system beneficial results would follow. NEW RAILWAY STATION. The Member for Napier asked the Minister for Railways to-day whether he will give instructions that plans be prepared at once and tenders called for a new Railway station at Napier. He stated that owing to the construction of the Napier-Gisborne trunk Railway and the large increase in goods carried on tlie Napier section, also the increased number of passengers travelling on this line, it is absolutely necessary that a new station should be built without delay. ’ NAPIER-GISBORNE RAILWAY. No time is being lost in pushing on the preliminary work in connection with the starting of the East Coast Railway from the Napier end. It is understood that the Hon. R. McKenzie (Minister for Public Works) has placed an order for the delivery here of 10,000 tons or rails for the line at this end. It will be some considerable time before these arrive, but in the meantime the work will be pushed on of preparing the route so that when they arrive the work will be far enough advanced for them to be laid down at once.
