HIGH COMMISSIONER’S CABLE. [per press 'association.] WELLINGTON, Feb. 26. Tlie High Commissioner’s cable, dated London February 24th, states: ’’The mutton market is quiet. Prices are slightly weaker. The lamb market is dull, owing to the poor demand, and there are sufficient supplies to last for present requirements. Canterbury s|d; North Island is freely offered at an average of s|d, best quality 4|d ; secondary Australian 4Ad; River Plate 4Jd. The beef market is quiet, with small business doing. Chilled hindquarters forequarters 3d. The butter market is quiet, but firm. A feeling of apprehension prevails, however, on account of the strike threatening the coal trade. The average price for the week for the choicest New Zealand, per cwt, is 1325; Australian 128 s; Danish 138 s; Siberian 1295; Argentine 1275. The cheese market is quiet but steady. There are very few offers from the Dominion. Prices are more or less nominal'at about the quotations already given. New Zealand good to fair, on spot, £2l ss; fair grade £2O ss; forward shipment New Zealand good to fair, £2l 10s; fair grade £2O 10s; fair current Manila, on spot, £2l 15s; forward shipment fair current Manila, £2l 10s. The output from Manila for the week was 32,000 bales. The cocksfoot seed market is firm, but there is little doing. Buyers are holding back until they know what the prospects of the crop are on the Continent. Wool: There is a better demand for merinos and coarse crossbreds at last rate quoted.
