CIVIL SITTING

THURSDAY, FEB. 29. (Before Mr- W, A. Barton, S.M.) Sitting in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, Mr- W. A. Barton, S.M., gave judgment for the plaintiffs in the following undefended civil cases:— Henry Williams and George Henry Williams (Mr. Burnard) v. Ta-miti Tupiwai. claim £23 2s 6d. and costs £3 7s; Henry Williams and George Henry Williams (Mr. Burnard) v. Hiri Paera, claim £52 14s lid. with casts £3 7s; Emily Wallis (Mr. Burnard) v. William Moar, claim £4 Ss, with costs 18s ; John Monk v. Henry S. C. Brooking, claim £8 16s lid, with costs 16s; William Pet-tie and C-o- (Mr. Burnard) v. Richard Chilton, claim £2 14s, and costs 10s; Helen Gartshore (Mr R. UBurke) v., George Pevreal .claim £2 17s 2d, and costs 10s. John Goodwin (Mr. Burnard) proceeded against- Thomas Long under a judgment summons. The defendant, giving evidence on his own behalf, said that he was a married man with five children, the eldest of these being 13 years of age. His average earnings since the date of the judgment had been something under £3 per week, and he paid 18s a week in rent. Sickness had been a frequent tiling in the family, and had freciuently necessitated medical attention. By Mr. Burnard: He was working for a land agent on commission and received £2 per week. Since the date of the judgment he had received £2 on account of his patent weed-killer. Beyond this he had received no other moneys. He expected to receive some nnoney from a. s-ale to be completed in June, and his commission in this connection should amount to £4O or £SO. His Worship said he would not make an order at that juncture, but would adjourn the ease until June 30t-lu Under judgment summons William Alfred Mcßoberts (Mr. Burnard) proceeded against,T. Albert (Mr. Bright) for the sum icf £6, and an order was made for the payment- of 7s 6d per week until the amount of the. claim was paid off. The adjourned case of Hamon and Smith (Mr. Burke) v. Jame-s Angus McDonnell (Mr. Burnard) was called, hut the defendant failed to appear. Mr. Burnard applied for a further adjournment, but Mr, Burke objected, and an order was made for the payment pf the amount claimed. £35 Bs, within 14 days, in default- 30 days’ imprisonment.
