CIRCULAR TO IMPORTERS. Regarding direct shipments from London to Gisborne the Bisborne Chamber of Commerce is desirous of getting further information in connection witli the imports into '.this town with a view to impressing on the various on tlie various shipping cctm|pjanie-s Ith© necessity of ■ transhipping . local goods here instead .of at the principal ports in the Dominion. With this object- in view the following circular has been issued to importers : “Dear Sir, —As you are no doubt aware the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce recently communicated with the New Zealand representative of the -shipping companies trading to this port, viz., N.Z. Shipping G'o., Tyser Line. Ltd., and tS'haw, Savill and Albion Co., and supplied, information as to the volume of direct shipments for the preceding year, making -a request " that the lines named should combine and put on a steamer monthly from London to call at this -port, thereby saving transhipping charges. The Colonial representatives of the companies named seemed favorable to the proposal and transmitted the request to their London houses, ' with favorable recommendations. I: Ws have since, 'however,' heard that the companies named, in conference, no doubt, have turned the proposal /down .meantime, on the grounds that the volume of tonnage did not warrant their complying with our request. We are particularly desirous of not permitting the matter to rest in its -present position and have, thought that the different importers might give us ’an •estimate of the probable tonnage they would be prepared to influence in the manner indicated for the next, , say three years. . j “In order, therefore, to assist the object we hove ]n view, will you kindly communicate with the Chamber your views on the matter, and state the amount of tonnage yon would be prepared to indent direct from London if the course which, we have outlined here is carried into effect.”
