An accident possessing some sensational features occurred at .Spningmont, about three miles fi-o'm Creswick, the other Sunday evening. Samuel Mason, with his wife, daughter, and infant (one year old) was riding in a gig, and when commencing the descent of a hill, which was long and steep, the swingle bar broke, causing the horse to bolt. The animal came down the hill at a great pace. When opposite the Springniont State school, Miss Mason jumped out and was injured. A little lower down the hill a young man named Michael O’Brien, a well-known footballer, was standing on the roadside. Mrs Mason seized' the opportunity and threw the child to O’Brien, who rushed forward and neatly caught tlie infant. In about another 100 yards .the vehi6le reached a '■sharp turn at the root of the hill and capsized, the two occupants being thrown out. The injured persons were speedily removed to the Creswick hospital. .Dr. Wilson found that Mr Mason had sustained a dislocated shoulder, Mrs Mason a broken colar bone, and Miss Mason, who is about sixteen, concussion of the brain. All are now progressing favourably. Rather than give up smoking her cherished clay pipe, an Irish bride nam- j ed Johanna Wood has left tire workhouse at F avers Irani, Kent. Her hus- I band, who was also an _ inmate of the I workhouse, has left with her. They were married on December 11, anti spent the honeymoon at the workhouse.
