The fields again large and the attendance was a record for a second, day. £9875. was passed through the macliihe, making a total of £20,351 for the meeting, an inorease of over £IOOO on last year, despite therebeing one race less per day this year. V.R.C. AUTUMN MEETING. TRIED DAY. POPINJAY WINS ALL-AGED STAKES. (.UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT] (Received Mar 7, 5.45 p.m.) FLEMINGTON, Mar. 7. It was a typical autumn day with bright sunshine. There was a big holiday crowd. Hopeful Stakes.—'Widjiewa 1, Blairmount 2, Count Fraquair and Aleconner (dead heat) 3. Fifteen runners. Won by half a head, 2 lengths between second and third horses. Time 2.21. ALL-AGED STAKES. A sweepstake of 10 sovs each, 2 forfeit, with 1000 added. Second horse to receive 200 and third 100 sovs out of the stake. Weight-for-age. 1 mile:— Mr A. Knox's br c Popinjay, by Mals-ter-Pose, 3yrs, S.G ] Mr S. Green's blk h, Comedy King, 8.12 2 Mr 11. Power's hr f, Wilari, 8.3 3 Also started: Son of the Marsh (8.12). Popinjay led all the way. Son of the Marsh was second for two furlongs and then fell back. At four furlongs Popinjay had a slight lead from Comedy King and Wilari. The positions were unchanged when coming round the turn. Popinjay led into the straight by three-quarters of a length, Comedy King being hard ridden. Before reaching the post Popinjay increased his lead and won by four lengths. A length separated second and third. Time 1.401.
Autumn Handicap.—Saxonite 8.8 1, Obi 7.3 2, Flavel 8.4 3. Eight runners. Obi led to the mile post, where Lord Nolan ran to the front and established a six lengths' load. Obi again took charge and led round the turn from Flavel and Eye 'Glass. The latter ran to the front in the straight, but Saxonite spurted and won by a head, Eye Glass falling back, and the race resulting as stated. There was a length-and-a-quarter between second and third. Time 2.49 f. Nursery Handicap.—Deeside 8.0 1, Black and Gold 7.3 2, Malby 7.1 3. Twelve
runners. Deeside was always to the front. Puringa was second for two furlongs and then fell away. A good finish. Won by a neck, a head between second and third. Time 1.155. Lock Plate. —Trafalgar 1, Prizefighter 2, Indiscreet 3. No others. Trafalgar took command at the mile post and won without effort by 1$ lengths, over 20 lengths being between second and • third. Time 3.315. River Handicap.—Mashtun G. 13 1, Nari 6.11 2, Hollowmas 6.7 3. Twelve runners. Won by three lengths.. Time 2.7.
