Bail was not asked for. Brown was further charged with the theft of £4O, and was remanded for two months. MacPherson 'was then charged with stealing three sums of £l2 10s each. The acting-manager produced a written confession, in the course of which MacPherson stated that ever since he had held his present position he had been tampering with the Company’s monies, and the defalcations would amount to about LbUUU. He would take money and alter the cash books in different ways in order to balance accounts. He suggested that Mr Lough, of Christchurch, should he obtained' to straighten out tho cash books, as h© was th© only officer in the Company with sufficient experience. He supposed that it aas the old story of hoping to make good the shortage and getting deeper into the mire. The general manager had warned him against races, but then he was in too deep to stop betting. * The branch manager gave evidence that as far as had been discovered there was a. shortage of £BOO more than the confession showed. MacPherson admitted that the confession was true and was committed for trial. _______
