WELLINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. WELLINGTON, Mar. 27. . Mr. A. T. 'Bate. of Wellington (Mr W. Lissant Clayton, local agent), reports the following sales and closing buyers' quotations on the Wellington Stock Exchange: —
A RISE IN SHIPPING SHARESWHAT IS THE CAUSE? (BvTelegraph—Special Correspondent) AUCKLAND, March 27- _ A sharp and unexpected _ rise in Union S.S. Company’s and New Zealand Shipping 'Company’s shares has taken .place in the last 24 hours, the offerings to-day being an advance of nearly Is on yesterday's buying quotation, "with no-business doing. Some speculation is going on among shipping and commercial people as to the probable reason for this advance, and a "oed deal of talk is prevalent about amalgamation proposals with the N.Z. Shipping Company, though nothing definite is apparently known. When the Union Company’s Auckland officials were seen this morning u was stated that there was no information which they were in a position .to give.. Mr Ueddne (Canadian Commissioner) thinks that it is possible that the unexpectedly rapid development of trade between Canada and Australasia might have had. some effect on the shares, though, he added, that this might be far from the real reason. A very large and lucrative trade was, however, being developed, by the,-shi.p« in this running, and, as it war; practically a new source of revenue, it might reasonably be inferred to have a bearing on the state of the market for shares. [PER TRESS ASSOCIATION.] A rumor was circulated in Auckland to-day that an amalgamation is contemplated between the New Zealand Shipping Company and the Union Shipping Company. On a press representative inquiring at the head office of the New Zealand 'Ping Company this evening, he was informed that the report -was without foundation.
