ASSASSIN WEEPS
-SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR DOUBLE MURDER.
It ■only took the jury at the Old Bailey ten minutes to come to a verdict in the case in Avhieh Meyer Abramovitch, a young Polish fruit hawker, Avas accused of the murder of Mr and Mrs Millstein in a restaurant (.where gambling avus carried on) in Hanbury Street, Spitalfields. The verdict ay as “Guilty.”
No evidence was called for the defence;, and •Abramovdtoll’s counsel, (Mr. Elkin) submitted that his client Avas insane when lie committed the crime.:
! 'Dr. ..Oyer, of Brixton Prison, then j gave evidence, and said that after a | long and careful examination lie had i come to the conclusion that Abramovitcli was sane. Mr. Justice Ridley said no one could doubt that Abramovitch. did commit the crime, and his motive was robbery. It had been, suggested he was not responsible for his action, but he (the judge) could find no evidence thatshowed tbah. >On the contrary, he thought it v» s a wilfully concocted and pl-anm iff air by which he attacked the Wiftn and woman for -repossessing himself of money lie had lost. He (the judge) held out no hopes whatever for .Abramovitch’s life. Sentence of . death was then -passed. Ambramovitch burst into tears, but quickly recovered, and on leaving the, dock murmured “Thank von.” ~
