THOUSANDS HOMELESS. HUNDREDS OF SQUARE MILES AFFECTED. THE DEATH ROLL CROWING. [UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGB l] NEW YORK, April 8. Thousands are homeless. Over 150 square miles round WestHisckman (Kentucky) were inundated when the river at Hickman broke its banks. Considerable loss of life is reportedAll trains are stopped. The river is still rising in the Cairo neighborhood, and fully 600 miles of country along the Mississippi are affected. Altogether the death list totals 20. A CRISIS REACHED. WILL THE DYKES HOLD? (Received April 9, 11.15 p.m.) NEW YORK, April 9. A crisis has been reached in regard to the floods. If the dykes hold another day the danger will be past. The total losses are already £2,000,000, and 30,000 people are homeless and living in tents. Army supplies are arriving.
