AUCKLAND, April 9.

A young man promoted a sweep at Ellerslie racecourse on Monday oil the St. George’s Handicap, and induced quite a number of - speculative clients to risk their half-crowns in the gamble. The prize was to be paid out after the race at an appointed place, but when the holder of the winning.horse —which turned out to be Antionette — turned up t-o receive his money, the young mm was not- to be found. Subsequently the impromptu sweep promoter was arrested, and to-day he was fined £lO, in default two months in gaol.
