Dean Hackett will leave Gisborne on Thursday for' the North; Inspector Cullen lias been appointed Commissioner of Police.
Mr. Jordan, chief clerk in the Justice Department, has been appointed Under-Secretary for Justice in succession to Mr. WakTegrave. Sir James Carroll, who is at present in Gisborne, will visit Wairoa at the end of this month; Hon. H- G. Ell, Postmaster-Gene-ral, lias had to cancel his visit to the North owing to the,death of his wife’s mother (says a Wellington telegram). He left Wellington last night for Christchurch. An Auckland telegram announces the death of Rev. H. B. Bennett, Presbyterian minister, aged 74. He had- been an invalid for some years. Captain Post, of the Government steamer Tutanekai, and Captain Black, coastal pilot, have been appointed assessors for the Magiterial inquiry to be held on Friday into the stranding of fhe Himitangi at the Chatliams.
According to the annual report of' the Gisborne Fire Brigade, a. very large number of honors came due during the last- twelve months. Two members, G Wildish and W. Fraser, gained the coveted 25 years’ gold star, which was presented to them at the annual conference held at Rotorua; and the following four members received their five years’ service medal : S. Ledger. H. Davy, T. Donovan, and F. Lowndes. The election of officers in connection with the Gisborne Fire Brigade, for fhe ensuing year resulted as follows: Senior foreman, Mr. F- Lowndes ; junior foreman, Mr. A. Thomson (re-elected); senior braucliman, Mr. W. Wildish (re-elected); junior branehman, Mr. J. Kane (re-elected); secretary, Mr. D. L. Ferguson (reelected)'; hydrant men, Messrs. >S. Ledger and R. Wildish. Sir Joseph Ward passed through Ashburton by the midday express yesterday, and was accorded a hearty reception by a crowd at the. station, who cheered lustily after the Mayor had tendered a welcome on behalf of the Ashburton people. Sir Joseph Ward, in replying, acknowledged the compliment, and assured them that he was not down, and that he_ had no intention of going out- of politics, and hoped to again take an active part m Dominion affairs.
Cr G. E. Darton wrote to the Borough’ Council last evening tendering his resignation'as a councillor, which position he had held continuously for the past four years. The Mayor said that Cr. Darton had taken a very keen interest in the borough. He thought, therefore, that it was only right that they should place on record his valuable services and receive Ins resignation with regret. Cr. Collins paid a high tribute to Cr. Darton s work on the Council, and hoped he would again be on the Council. It was decided-, to receive the resignation.
