BOXING.

(By “Wallop.”) The Hawke’s Bay Boxing Asso nation -will bold a tournament on Tuesday next, April 30. A recent cable to the Sydney papers announces that a Longford-Jeannette fight in Los Angelos is not unlikely. This will probably follow Langford’s affair with Burns at Langdon (Canada) of which mention was made last week. * * * Jack Clarke has signed to meet Larry Foran at the Gaiety in Sydney on May 14th. The New Zealander is also looking for arguments with several other boxers of repute on the other side. -X- ■* Of his expressed conviction that lie must have a good chance against Johnson, who by'the way, has received rather serious injuries in a motor smash this week, Jim Flynn says:— “Peter Jackson, George Godfrey, Joe Walcott, George Dixon, and Joe Cans —all great coloured fighters of their times —withered away, and Johnson has already turned the corner.’’ * * * Bill Rudd, the New Zealand heavyweight now in Sydney, was knocked out in the second round at Sydney recently by a welter weight—to wit, Pat. Bradley. Rudd was badly beaten all through and was finally outed in the most convincing manner possible.

Jack Lester out-pointed Howard in their fight at tlie Stadium, which took place on Saturday week last.

Sam McVea met with a painful accident last week. While attending to his automobile, portion of themechanism caught the top of the forefinger of his right hand, and injured it so that medical attention was necessary. Good sports'will sympathise with a good fellow such as McVea is, especially when they arc told that the mishap may keep him out of the ring for several weeks, and play up with his “Porky” Flynn and Sam Langford engagements; but Mr McIntosh is still hopeful that the latter event, fixed for the 11th prox., might take place. * * * . The Melbourne correspondent of the Sydney Referee writes: —Billy Wenard .the ex-Maorilander, but now residing in W.A., is evidently wearing an under-sized hat, as he forwards to Melbourne his photo., with the inscription, “Billy Wenard, -jhampio i feather-weight of Australia.” * X A cable from New York to the Sunday Times, says: “Articles have been signed for a bout between Mat Wei].;, the English light-weight champion, and Packy MacFarlond, the clever American light-weight at Madison Square on April 26.” The winner of this contest will have every right, and be placed better than any other boxer, to challenge Ad. Wolgast for tlie light-weight championship of the world. * * * The seemingly never-ending controversy as to who will he Johnson’s next opponent goes on apace. His affair with Flynn is still claimed to be on the boards, but no definite announcement has yet been made as to its location, and, in the meantime, there seems to be some prospect of Bombardier Wells stepping in and securing a battle. There is big money offering for a. Wells-Al Palzgr bout, and the Englishman would do well to accept. Should he defeat Palzer there would be considerable interest, in a WellsJohnson affair, and his certain end—the. loser’s—would be bigger than if he were to meet the champion without having “made good” in America by defeating one of the lesser lights.
