"When in Auckland the Rotorua Acclimatisation Society urged on the Minister for the Interior that Societies should be authorised to issue licenses as well as postmasters (says a P.A. message). Hon. Mr Russell, having ascertained that there is no legal difficulty in the way, lias issued structifons that every society applying shall be authorised to sell licenses in addition to their being procurable at uost offices.
Within three weeks of taking office, and within two days after visiting Auckland, the Minister for Internal Affairs lias practically settled the vexed question of overcrowding at the Avondale mental hospital. The build ing on the female side, will be raised to""two storeys, with accommodation for 40 extra patients, and at the reaW a new ward will be built- for 70 or 80 patients. Another building to he erected will accommodate at least < 0 patients.
John Lewis, the prisoner who escaped from custody in Wellington on Thursday, was recaptured in an empty house at Ohariu Valley, about 10 miles from Wellington, by detectives on. Saturday morning. He was hiding in ; a cupboard. He had shaved off hits beard, and had civilian clothes over his prison garb. In his possession the police found food, false moustache, and a small sum cf money. Lewis made no attempt to resist arrest.
