THE LENA SHOOTING AFFRAY
(Received April 30, 1.5 a.m.) _ ST. PETERSBURG, April 29. The police suppressed a demonstration in the Nevsky Prospekt against the Lena, shooting affray. The demonstrators crossed the Neva and reassembled. One hundred and twenty three were arrested, including 39 girl students.
IMPERIAL PATENTS SCHEME
(Received April 29, 11.20 p.m.) LONDON, April 29, Tlie Agents-General have been elected vice-presidents of the Institute of Inventors, which aims to secure the establishment of Imperial instead of separate patents in various parts of the Empire, and also at advising intending patentees.
JAPANESE SHIPPING STRIKE
(Received April 29, 10.40 p.m.) TOKIO, April 29. Granting bonuses for the present voyages has temporarily settled the sailors’ strike.
SENTENCED TO DEATH
(Received April 29. 1.5 a-m.) SYDNEY, April 29. Jaeky Lacey, an aboriginal, lias been sentenced to death for criminally assaulting Mrs Goldsmith, aged 94 years on February 14. The victim subsequently died.
THEFT OF JEWELLERY
(Received April 30, 1.5 a.m.) SYDNEY, April 29. During the voyage of tlie Malieno from Auckland to Sydney thieves extracted jewellery valued at £2OO from the luggage of a lady passenger.
THE SINGER CASES

MacPherson pleaded guilty to stealing £5497, the property of the Singer Company, and, was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment. The Chief Justice remarked that he took into consideration the fact that the example set him in tlie office was not of the best.
THE SYDNEY MYSTERY
(Received April 29 . 9.35 p.m) SYDNEY, April 29. At tlie inquest on the body of Clarice Varkor (not Barker, as previously cabled), who was found dead in a stormwater channel, an open verdict was returned. The evidence did not disclose fresh facts.
