Air. AY. A .Barton, S.M., left yesterday for a periodical visit to the Coast. . Mr. William Keeble, aged 47 years, a well-known resident of Wairarapa, died suddenly in his shop at Paliiatua yesterday (according to a P.A. message). He leaves a wife and familyThe supposed cause of death was heart failure.
Colonel Wallack, Commandant of Victoria, lias been appointed Commandant of the New South Wales forces.
Air Bevna, a Melbourne barrister, has been appointed judge of the Northern Territory. Air Jas AlacKenzie, who has been appointed Surveyor-General, was entertained at a social on Alonday night ;by tho combined staffs of the Wellington District Land Office, and was presented with travelling bags and rugs.
New Zealanders entertained Sir Joseph Ward at a dinner at Alel—bourne. Sir A. H. Guinness, New Zealand Speaker, was present. Air F. Trcgear, formerly secretary to the Department of Labor, has been selected as Labor candidate for . the vacancy on tlic Wellington City Council, caused by Air AlcLnren’s election to the Aiayoralty.
Aliss Constance Cecilia St. Paul, aged 23, daughter of Air. H. V. St. Paul, manager of the Napier branch of the Bank of Australasia, died suddenly yesterday as the result of heart failure. She made no complaint of feeling ill yesterday, but shortly after bidding her parents good-night, Air. St. Paul heard a noise, and looking into his daughter’s bedroom, found her lying on the floor, dead.
The Prime Minister, Hon. T. Alackenzie, returned to Wellington from his northern trip oil Saturday. This evening probably Air Alackenzie will leave for the South Island. He will attend a banquet to the Hon T- Y. Duncan "at Oamaru on Thursday night. On Saturday lie will visit Balclutha, where he will formerly open the Coronation Park and Post Office. In the evening he will deliver an address, and subsequently will he entertained at a banefuet. On 7th May Air Alackenzie will be in Waiau (in Southland). He will transact departmental business and receive deputations in the afternoon. In the evening he will attend a social given in honor of Air J. C. Thomson.
A pleasing little function took place at the local office of Alessrs. Williams and Kettle, Ltd., yesterday afternoon, when the staff assembled to farewell Air. J. Busby, who has severed his connection, with the firm to take up pastoral pursuits on the East Coast- Air. M. L. Fester, manager. presided, and referred to the cordial relations which had existed between Air. Busby and all the other members of the staff during the three and a-half years he had been in the firm’s employ. He spoke appreciatively of Air. Busby’s business abilities, and while regretting that he was leaving the staff, trusted that- the change to sheepfarming would prove i both pleasant and lucrative. On bei half cf the staff he presented Mr. j Busbv with a handsome set 'of pipes, ! a pouch, and a tobacco jar as a small i token of the esteem in which he was I held. Air. Busby suitably responded i statin«• that he would always look | back with pleasure to the years lie * had spent- as a. member of the stair of ‘ the firm. Mr. Busby was also entertained at dinner at the Masonic Hotel last evening by “The Hole-in-tne--1 Wall Camp,” of which he has been & 1 popular member for the past three 1 years. Air.
