THE GISBORNE TRAMWAYS
PRELIMINARY PROGRESS. A SHORTAGE OF SLEEPERS. TURNING OF THE FIRST SOD. CEREMONY PROPOSED. The Borough Engineer reported to the Council last evening that tramway construction had been carried out during the fortnight on the ballast siding and the special work in Carnavon Street for the entrance to the car shed. Cr. Webb said that lie would like to see the Council taking Rome steps in connection with the turning of the first sod. He hoped to see 15 or 20 ears running and the sooner they were running in order that’ the tramway might be made a paying concern tho better. Cr. Smith said he wanted to know if the sleepers were coming to hand. The Engineer said that the supply wa s very indifferent. There was some trouble about securing the, timber in New South Wales. Owing to the bad weather the timber could not be secured from the bush just at present. He had written to the agent asking him if lie could make other mentsThe Alayor said bo would be only too pleased to arrange a function such as suggested by Cr. Webb. The work at present was of a very preliminary nature, and if the function was left till Gladstone Road was reached it would be better. Or. Bright: I would suggest leaving it until we see the cars running. Cr. Collins: I would suggest the same thing. The Alayor: I will keep the matter in .view.
