FOOTBALL.
SIR JAMES CARROLL ON THE GAME. Speaking to footballers at a. meeting on Monday evening Hon. Sir James Carroll became reminiscent and reminded liis listeners of the early Rugby days afterwards giving them advice on the. subject, of football. Rugby, he explained, had been reduced to a science. Unlike in his days, the game was not one of “bul~ locking,” but a game of science. Every small point needed study, the same as going through a University. No better maxim could be taken than to keep “on the ball,” as the song said. They could not go wrong if they' kept on the ball and stuck to it through thick and thin. In Gisborne there was the material to work on, only the players must cultivate the scientific side oL-the game. He had seen all the big games of late, and spoke from his knowledge of these. p.B. [PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, May 14. The Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union met tonight. An appeal Joy a contribution towards the fund for the purchase pf pictures for the National Art Gallery was referred to the annual meeting. The Wellington Rugby Union wrote asking that as the amount of its loan of £4ooo' had been half paid off would the Committee consider the question of reducing the rate of interest from 3 per cent, to 21 per cent. The amount outstanding is £IOSO. The matter was referred to the incoming committee.
The disqualification of twelve months imposed on T. .Rapson by the Wellington Rugby Union was made generalAn application by E. It. Watkins for reinstatement was declined. The Poverty Bay Union wrote urging the reinstatement of players in that district, as a check to the growth of the Northern League game. It was well-known, said the letter, that football in Hawke’s Bay last season was a fiasco owing to the strides made by the League game. It was reasonable to assume that a number of the smaller unions had already been approached with perhaps the prospect of an early representative match and a return game to induce them. The letter was referred to the .annual meeting. THE ASSOCIATION GAME.
