THE RUGBY GAME. GISBORNE v. BOYS. ; The opening of the Thursday Rugby competition! took place at the Domain ■yesterday afternoon, when the tisoorne team met Old Boys, an the presence of a largo gathering of spectators After a strenuous game, some stages of which were breezy for an initial match, Gisborne secured a wm by S points to 3. Gisborne, with a strong sun in their eyes, kicked off, end pushed the play for the first iew' n>Juntos. The backs ’ saw little of the leather* the forwards indulging in a. fair amount of close play, while at times they broke off in a series of short .passes. Thus matters proceeded until halttime, and the next spell was ushered in with football of a livelier nature. First blood was drawn by J. Bollock, •who. having got the ball from the scrum, executed a pretty cut-in and touched down in ia good position.. Squirrell added the possible points. PFromm kept well np to the forwards m a, concerted rush and registered a try, which was not converted. I 1 or Ulcl Boys, D McLeod scored a good try. The pace was slower towards the close. Rugby Union was held to-day.- Mr. George Dixon, who presided, said that the outlook for Rugby Union football was extremely satisfactory. The Poverty Bay Union wrote asking that disqualification be removed from certain Hawke’s Bay players who had played the Northern Union game. It was resolved to write to the English Rugby Union for permission to reinstate all playoi*s who had signed up to the present any form of application with the Northern League or played the League gam© on these players standing down for a year from date of disqualification. The following remits from Wanganui suggesting alterations in laws of game were carried:—“That the value of a penalty goal be reduced to two points,’’ that after any score- by either side play be recommenced by a kick-off (place kick) from half-way.” A proposal to secede from the English Union was defeated by a large majority. It was resolved to recommend the. management committee that the rules be- printed in Maori.
The management committee was authorised to advance a further sum of £I4OO to the Southland Rugby Union, provided that satisfactory security is given, to loan to be at 4 per cent. It was decided to adopt the same course as last year in the matter of sending North and South Island country teams on tour. It was resolved that the North v. South Island match be played on July 13. Tiie location of the game was left to the management committee, with the recommendation that if possible it be played ini Wanganui or Hawke’s Bnv It was decided to ask for a ruling of the English Union as to whether any union has power to make a by-law authorising persons other thajl referees to report rough play to it, It was adopted as a recommendation to tho management committee that an effort be made to send' a New Zealand team to,America ini the near fu.tnrpi
