FOOTBALL.

THE RUGBY GAME. SATURDAY’S MATCHES. icaiti-city' and y.m.p. again WIN. The weather was all that could ho desired on Saturday when the Poverty Bay Rugby Union’s competitions were continued. There was a fair attendance, and in the senior contest a couple of fair games resulted. Y.M.P. had an easy . victory when playing against Garrison, the score being 26 to 13. Kaiti-City defeated United by 21 points to 3. POSITION OF THE TEAMSPoints Oh.

Y.M.P. (26) v. GARRISON (3). The affair on No. 1 ground proved an easy thing for Y.M.P.,, the '-Garrison colts not being able to keep up to the pace set by the three-year-olds. Jumping out from the barrier-the Red combination set up a hot pace, hut Garrison (green) hung on tenaciously and at the half-way was only a short distance in the rear. The going over the first part of the journey had, however, been too fast for the colts, anti for the nest quarter the team faded away. Just before entering the straight they put in a determined rally "and succeeded in _ reducing the gap* by three points. The effort was not sustained, for the Reds, going iii great style, galloped over the final stage at a great rate, and passed, the box’ with a lead of 23 points. Y.M.P. kicked off, and the ball bounced out five yards from the corner- The Greens kept the play tight, and the ball going over the line, succeeded in forcing. Again the Reds attacked, but Miller, picking up smartly, cut through his opponents, and transferred play to neutral territory. A succession of scrums followed. Y.M.P. were getting the ball, but the half was nullifying the advantage by going on his own. From a scrum in mid-efild tlie Red hookers sent the hall out cleanly, and the half spoiled what appeared to be a good opening bv trying to butt through on his own. * The Garrison pack hustled things some, but could make no impression on the Red defence. Play was transferred to Green _ territory and a sharp dash led by Kokiri and Kershawe was nicely stopped by Robinson taking, a smart mark. The Reds again pressed, Miller saving by securing and kicking well down the field. From the line-out Kokiri collared the ball and started a passing rush, which Miller stopped by a good tackle. Again the Reds attacked, and a good chance to score was lost through Kukingi running too far before passing, the ball going forward. In the resultant scrum Musgrove was penalised for off-side —Matahiki failing in the . attempt at goal. Even play followed, eventually Y.M.P. being awarded a free kick in mid-field. Y. Somervell mulled his attempt to catch the ball, and Kokiri, who had followed up fast, snapped up the ball and scored. Ran.gi goaled- Stimulated by this set-back Garrison made things merry. . Miller, setting up a hot pace, carried play well down into Red territory. Here Smith, cutting in, made a nice opening and, assisted by Kershawe, took the ball to the other end of the field. A scrum took place on the line, and Waata, picking the ball out, was promptly penalised. The relief obtained by Garrison, however, was of short duration. Hie Reds set up a hot pace. O. Somervell saving with a good tackle. A little later Smith got over the line, but was recalled._ The forwards got going, and a certain try was lost through Poata knocking on rigiit on the line. Garrison were having a parlous time to keep the Reds out, Miller on one occasion bringing off a splendid save. The whistle for halftime brought relief without any addition to the score of 5 points to nil in favor of Y.M.P.

Y.M.P. made the pace hotter in the second half, and soon got the upper hand of their opponents. Waata, probably, acting on some fatherly advice administered during the spell, sent the ball out to his backs, and some pretty .passing was witnessed. From the commencement of hostilities Y.M.P- pressed and a try was lost through Kershawe getting off-side. A little later Smith, picking up the ball in mid-field, made a nice run and passed to Hamilton, who scored near the corner. Matahiki goalerl with a splendid kick. Play settled for a few .minutes in neutral zone, and Waata, getting the ball from a line-out, sent it out to Smith —Kukingi—Hamilton, who was thrown out on the corner. A ■succession of scrums was hold on the line. Garrison eventually forcing. Shortly after Waata again secured, and passed to Clarke —Smith —Rukiugi—'Hamilton, v/ho scored near the corner, Matahiki kicked a magnificent goal from the touchline. The Reds attacked from the kick-off, and ft Sbipcrv-cll was penalised in front of the"posts for lying on the ball. Rang! piloted tod > ,thcr between the uprights, After these reverses tlie

Green pack realised their responsibilities. A. determined rush into the Red twenty-five was stopped by Rangi, but a forward off-side gave Garrison . achance to score, R. Somervell making an unsuccessful attempt at goal. Garrison continued to attack, and after aseries of scrambles on the ling Davis dived over. ‘ Miller failed to convert. From tins out Garrison was never in the hunt. A Red passing lout, Smith to Clarke to Hamilton, then hack to Smith ended in the latter touchingdown in a good position, but Rangi failed with the kick. Play immediately returned to Green territory, and ' Hukingi, securing, sprinted for the line, but Rauka failed t° hold the pass given him, knocking on a few feetFrom the line. From the scrum the ball shot out to Broughton, who ran in and scored behind the posts practically unopposed. Rangi converted. No-sidc was sounded shortly after with the score 26 to 3 in favor of Y.M.P. During the latter stages of the game, which were played in a falling light,. Mills, a Garrison player, was ordered off the field for allegedly striking an opponent. Mr Dean refereed. KAITI-CITY (21) v. UNITED (5). A fast and open game and good combined rushes on the part of the Kaiti-City backs were the chief characteristics of the Kniti-City-United match which occupied No. 2 ground at the Victoria Domain, when the former won bv 21 points to 5. Th.e City team was considerably strengthened since the previous Saturday bv the inclusion of Skillen, Tocher and O’Neill in the hacks, while the presence of Moan a in the vanguard made it distinct difference to this department. United played well during the first spell and time after time frustrated 'the dangerous passing rushes made by Fromm, Skillen, Tocher and co. In the second half, however, their defence was not nearly so good, and they were unable to withstand the rushes of the opposing backs. Altogether the game was a most interesting one from a spectacular point of view. The teams were: Kaiti-City. Full-back, Stubbs; three-quarters, Tait, Carruthers and O’Neill: five-eighths, Tocker and Skillen; lialf-back, P. Fromm ; forwards, Stagpoole, Spencer, McGill, Moan a, Nicolas, Leach, Douglas and I nckett. „ , ~ United.—Full-back, Newton; threequarters, Archer, G. Pollock and McKinney : five-eighths, Lees; halt-back, Wvllie*; forwards, O’Brien, Pether- - bridge,- Armitage, Davis, Squirrell, Winter, Wheeler, Sexton. Soon after the commencement; Fromm set the backs iii motion by sending the ball to Skillen, from whom it went to Carruthers and Tate, but the last-named failed to take the ball cleanlv, and a scrum was ordered a few yards from .the United’s line. Here City'were penalised and lollock cleared by a good kick. City, howevei, again returned by a passing rush, Skillen picking up tlie ball and senclino- it to Carruthers and Tocker, the latter just failing to score. A scrum ensued, and Wvllie relieved by kicking well down the field. Play remained" in neutral territory till Moana got possession, and lie. set the backs going again by passing it to Tocker. Some pretty combined play was then indulged in bv himself, Carruthers, and O’Neill, and the last-named was just stopped on the line, Pollock removing danger by kicking down the field. Carruthers secured the oval and put it into touch. From the lineout it went to Archer, who kicked down to Citv’s goal-posts. Stubbs failed to take the ball and it bounced over his head, and Pollock, who followed no fast, fell on it and scored. He easily converted. Tocker secured the ball "a little later and passed to Carruthers, who failed to take it, and Pollock kicked well down the field. Stubbs returned, and Davis shot it out near City’s twenty-five. A scrum followed the Tine-out, from which City were penalised, and Pollock had an unsuccessful shot at goal. Moana. and Nicolas headed a forward rush into United’s quarter, but Newton saved by kicking out, A scrum followed a few minutes later, from which the ball went out to Wvllie, and with the assistance of the forwards he shifted the scene of operations to midfield, the rush being stopped bv Stubbs. Here O’Neill got the ball, and after a good run tried to pass to Nicolas, but Newton getting in relieved the pressure. The United forwards then invaded City’s twentyfive, but the ball was kicked. into toucli-in-goal. Loose play had United in trouble, but Wyllie and Lee removed the danger. From a scrum Fromm secured the ball, and after a passing rush between himself, Tocker, Skillen, Carruthers and Tait the game settled a few feet from United’s line, but Pollock relieved the position bv a good kick. After loose play in mid-field, Moana picked up- the ball, from whom it went to Carruthers, Tocker and O’Neill, the last-named scoring. M.ofina failed to convert, but the ball just missed, going outside the posts. Moana later broke away, and was, nearly over, iust being stopped a few feet from the line. The United- forwards then took the ball to City’s territory, but a mark by Tocker repelled the attack. Moana then headed a rush into United’s quarter, where Skillen failed to gather up the oval and tlie opposing forwards got in and cleared, taking the nan "'.ell into City’s twenty-five, where Stubbs checked operations. A serum ensued; and the ball was kicked over City’B line, Wheeler just failing to reach it before it crossed the dead ball line. Half-time was then called. ,

On resuming, a forward ritsh by United had City in trouble, but Slallen obtained possossion and a passing bout between himself, locker and Carruthers removed. Gradually the ball was worked to United s nne> where Citv were penalised, but this did not give them much relief, for a scrum was ordered, after uhich the ball was kicked over and a foice insulted. City again returned by u passing rush and were awarded a penalty. Tocker took the kick, and the ball went across to Stagpoole, and after a run he passed to Fromm, from whom it went to Winter, and he potted a coal. Moana and Stagpoole took play to United’s territory, where from a scrum Fromm got the- ball and 'scored Tait had an unsuccessful kick at opal. Moana opened up the game by passing to Skille , from whom the ball went to Carnitlers and Stagpoole, and the scored right behind the posts. lockei easily converted. United then iallied, and play was in the vicinity of City s goalposts, hut Tocker relieved by a kick.
