MATAWHERO STOCK SALES. There was a large attendance at the Mata where stock sale yesterday , when about IS,OOO sheep and 1-500 head of cattle were yarded. On the whole the market, except for good store sheep, was not very animated.

Fat Sheep. The entry of fat sheep was large and was composed mostly of ewes. Several pens failed to find purchasers and -business was confined to ewes 280 being disposed of at prices ranging from 8s lid to 11s. Fat Cattle. There was a gool yarding of fat cattle, but the majority of the prime lines failed to reach the reserve, and were in consequence not disposed of. Three bullocks made £6 and fourteen cows £3 15s to £4 10sStore Sheep. ... About 18,000 store sheep were offered, including some good wethers and hoggets, which sold well. There was also a demand for good ewes, but the poaer classes failed to elicit much cor-petition. A -line of 192 ewes from Te-Jiau-o-te-Atua station brought 13s 2d, while another line of 246 2, 4 and G-toi.ths made 12s 6d. A consign-nifi'-t of ewes in lamb made- 10s 6d. Medium made from 7s 6cl to 9s, and inferior and culls from 3s to 6s. Twotooth wethers made from 11s to 12s Bu, while a line of 2 and 4-tooths realiseu 13s. A further lot made 13s 6d. Otf ers made from 10s 9d to 12s 8d according to age and condition. Good hoggets made from 9s 2d to 10s 3d, medium from 7s to 8s 7d, and others from 4s Id to 6s lOd. Pigs. About forty pigs were yarded and thev consisted mostly of weaners for which there was little demand. Bacon ers sold up to 30s, porkers to 13s and weaners to Ss.

Store r.rd Dairy Cattle. There was a large entry of store and dairy cattle, but the market was dull. Among the sales were 14 bub locks at £4 10s, 23 at £4 12s 6d; 1/ heifers at £2 10s; • 20 steers at £3 to £3 12s; 1 heifer at £2 10s; 7 cows at £3 and 10 weaners £l.

INCREASED EXPORTS

During the half-month ended May 15, >1912, the exnorts from the Dominion totalled £1,337,462, as against £1,034,237 for the corresponding period last year. The details are as follow: Butter £16,452, cheese £43,8866, frozen beef £33,158, frozen mutton (carcases) £128,167, legs and pieces £5342, frozen lamb £224,4.00( wheat £3443, oats £45,099, potatoes £1323, hemp £41,835, tow £3340, kauri gum £34,719, grain and pulse (other than wheat and oats) £10,806, hops £6407, hides £7804, skins (all kinds). £72,763, tallow £90,983, timber £21,695, wool £477,530, gold £68,310.

THE PRICE OF WHEAT. • [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, May 23. With flour at £8 15s per ton and the high prices at present ruling for wheat, it is freely asserted that millers are running their mills at a loss. One miller stated to-day that lie reckoned he was losing £4O per week with his iiresent diminished output, and he woul dhavo to consider the question of closing his mill until wheat got cheaper, or flour dearer. He quoted figures to show that he was losing 19s 9d per ton, on flour.
