A NEW LEGAL FIRM.
MESSRS. HUTCHINSON AND ARNOLD.
Our readers will be interested to hear of a new legal firm having opened business in Gisborno: Messrs Hutchinson and Arnold. Mr George Hutchinson is already well known in the district as an advocate. Mr William Arnold, liis partner, is a solicitor admitted in England some twenty-two years ago. Ho obtained in January 1890 high legal honors at the Solicitors’ Honors Examinations in England, there being only six before him out of all England. He has' had a large practical experience of English and New Zealand law and its administration. He lias also had some experience in Native Land business. During the course of his English legal and professional career, Mr Arnold acted as Deputy Magistrate’s Clerk and Crown Prosecuting Solicitor for 12 years. He lias briefed some of the eminent barristers of the English bar, amongst them may be mentioned Sir Frank Lockwood (when Solicitor-Gen-eral), the late Mr Justice Jelf, Tindal Atkinson, K.C. (now County Court Judge), the Hon. Alfred Lyttelton (late Colonial Secretary), R. H. Amphlett, Esq., K.C. (Recorder for the City of Worcester), H. T. Boddam, Esq. (now an Indian Judge)' etc. As Crown Prosecuting Solicitor Mr Arnold has bad cases before the late Justice Hawkins, Lord Field, Justice Stephens, Justice Day, Justices Matthews, Denman, A. L. Smith and others. Mr Arnold also acted as Deputy Clerk to a local board of health and a school board for a period of seven years—and lias . attended on municipal matters before the House of Lords Committee, viz., on Tramways, gasworks and waterworks bills in the- English Parliament. For four years Mr. Arnold in his professional capacity acted as borough auditor of the Corporation accounts of an English county borough having a population of 65,000 inhabitants. Mr Arnold carried on the practice of a solicitor in England on his own account for a period of fifteen years. In his private nractice he did a. large business on behalf of merchants in forming firms into companies or syndicates, in commercial and bankruptcy matters, lie having a large County Court practice. Owing to his health failing, however, lie was ordered to leave England for New Zealand. His behltii has been recovered, thanks to the Zealand climate and open-air life. During the last five years Mr Arnold lias acted as manager and legal adviser to Sir Kenneth Douglas, Bart., of the city of Wellington, barrister and solicitor. He has after much consideration left a good position with Sir Kenneth Douglas (who is sorry to lose his services) in order to assist Mr Hutchinson in transacting legal business for his increasing clientele in the Gisborne and Poverty Bay districts. Air. Arnold was for many years a fellow of the Royal Statistical Society. London. He lias a wife and one son, who is at present second mate on the s.s. ‘ Alexander, trading between Wellington, Nelson and the West Coast.
