FINE WORDS OR HARD FACTS.

(to THE EDITOR.)

Sir, —In reading the report of the Council proceedings last night I noticed that Cr. Bright was credited with having stated that “when the sewerage system was in working order in a few months, lie thought that the cost (of the connections) would soon he forgotten in consequence of the benefits derived.” Now, I can hardly believe that he really felt in his heart of hearts what he said. Let me say. first of all that everybody will surely appreciate the benefits to bo derived by the householders under the scheme. Put no matter how much they may be gratified, it will not make the cost any the less to them. It is useless to try and gloss the matter over with fine words. Take my own case. I am a married man with three children. Out o,f my salary of £3 a week I am setting aside £l' 7s 6‘d towards the purchase of the cottage in which we are living. Seeing the cost of living is so veryi high I have not been able as yet to put more than a very small sum by for tlio proverbial “rainy day.” Where am 1, and there aro scores more, in a like position, going to find tho money for the sewerage. As far as one can hear £l2 will only be a thlrd ; or a fourth of the amount it will cost. —I am, etc., “A WORKINGMAN ”
