THE QUESTION OF VOTING POWER.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—As an old resident, allow me to compliment Cr. Collins) oil his new scheme of voting for municipal elections. It is a splendid idea that extra voting power should be allowed in the case or actual ratepayers. The position to-day is that any “carpet bagger” who lias been hero a few months*, has as much say as a permanent resident as to who shall be* on the Council. It is not a proper state of affairs. Just imagine—people .who could put tlieir things in a Maori kit having as big a, hand in our affairs as we people who intend to stay here all our lives. We permanent citizens must raise a strong protest and help Cr. Collins in the matter. What I say is—make the town as much as possible “Gisborne for Gisborweitcs.” —Yours, etc., OLD RESIDENT.
