FOOTBALL.
THE RUGBY GAME. SATURDAY’S MATCHES. Splendid weather prevailed on Saturday for the Poverty Bay Rugby Union’s competitions, and the grounds were in excellent order. Kaiti City again defeated United by 18 points to nil, while Y.M.P. defeated Garrison by 12 points to 3. The position of the senior teams is as follows:
KAITI-CITY (18) v. UNITED (0). Ivaiti-City defeated United on No. 1 ground' by 18 points to nil. IvaitiCity were superior in all departments to their opponents. City kicked off and after an exchange- of kicks Stubbs found the line in the centre. From the line out a scrum ensued, and 1 P. Fromm initiated a passing rush -by sending the ball to Tocker, who transferred to Ciarruthers, from whom it went to Ski lien and play settled in United’s territory, but a free kick relieved. The ball was then taken to City’s quarter, where off-side play by Nicolas allowed G. Pollock to have a kick at goal, but the attempt was futile. Murray, by a good kick, again had United; defending, but from a scrum they were penalised and City relieved pressure. From a scrum near United’s twentyfive D'cdds secured the ball and kicked across the field. G. Fromm secured it and was just stopped on the line. From a scrum the 1 ball was scoured by P. Fromm and went through the backs to Tate, but the latter lost it on. the line and G. Pollock forced. Another passing rush between P. Fromm, Tocker and Tait was nearly responsible for a score, Wyllie saving. City continued to attack, hut goodwork -by Davis and White relieved pressure and the game settled in midfield. Stubbs here secured it and found the line in United’s twenty-five and a scrum followed. The ball went out to P. Fromm to Carruthers to Tait, who- took the ball to United’s line, where a scrum was ordered, and United forced. The ball was Inter secured by G. Fromm, who kicked, and G- Pollock marked. Froin a scrum in the centre P. Fromm took play into United’s territory, where he was thrown forward. A serum ensued, and after a passing rush between P. Fromm, Tocker. Carruthers, Skillen and Tait the ball was again, transferred to Tocker, and he scored, alcana failed to convert. A little later Sextori was compelled to force just before half time was called. On resuming play was taken to United’s territory, but G. Pollock relieved bv a good kick. Stubbs later secured the ball, from whom it went to G. Fromm, Skillen. Tait. Carruthers. Tocker and: P- Fromm, and play settled in United’s territory, hut (Squirrel and Sexton shifted the scene *of operations to the centre. G. Fromm cot the 'ball, and after a good run kicked, and Dodds forced. City again returned, but a penalty allowed United to clear. The ball was kicked back, but Wyllie failed to field it, and Tocker took play up to United’s line, where he was collared by .Dodds. Skillen later cook a- mark and had a shot at goal, the ball just missing the posts. After loose play Stagpcole secured the ball and passed to Moana, who took play right- up to the line, where a scrum was ordered. 'The ball went out to P. Fromm, who got over. Tait converted. United were compelled to force shortly afterwards. From loose play in United’s twentyfive Moana got possession and forced his way over. Tait converted. The hall was later taken to City’s twentyfive. where from a mark by O’Leary, Squirrel had an unsuccessful shot at goal. City again forced'their opponents hack, and from a scrum in United’s quarter P. Fromm secured the ball and passed to Tocker, who got over. Tait converted. After play in mid-field time was called Mr S. S. Dean was referee.
Y.M.P. (12) V. GARRISON (3). That Garrison are an improving side •was again evidenced in Saturday’s match. Y.M.P. never locked Jikc losing, hut on many occasions they had to keep tho donkey kicking in order to stop the green and blacks from notching points. Led by McColl and Aiken the Green pack made tilings hum, and had they received a full amount of support from the rear division, would have ended up the game closer than 12 points to 3. Garrison, through the agency of V. Somervell, attacked after the kickoff, T'amati saving by means of a timely mark. Later Broughton picked up near mid-field and set the ball-in motion, and the rush ended near the corner- Rods continued to press, and .Broughton spoiled a fins opening by passing forward, from the ensuing si rum McColl broke away with the
ball and temporarily relieved- the situation. The Reds returned to Garn-sonVt'wenty-five and the former were awarded a. "free-kick in a good position. Rangi’s kick was charged down and play was transferred to mid-field. From here McColl secured the ball andl dashed through . the opposing backs as far as Raugi, who saved nicely. The Reds gradually worked the ball back to Green’s territory, and a force resulted. Later R, Somervell stopped a- Red movement by marking, and play settled in the Red twentyfive. From a scrum Thompson secured the ball and, cutting in-field, had an excellent opportunity to score, butlistened to a call to pass from another back, and the opportunity was lost. Had he gone on his own he would have undoubtedly got over. Play was then removed to the Green zone, where Smith picked up and, after a good run, passed t-o Broughton, who scored! near the corner Raugi failed to add- Mid-field play followed the drop-out until Griffiths broke away, and Raugi was called upon to save. The Greens again attacked —Rangi relieving. A few minutes later Daly minted an attack, and Miller got over, but was called back for knocking on. Play continued in Red territory, where Thompson snapped up a smart mark- Miller took a shot at goal, but failed .to fruit if y. Greens still continued to apply pressure, but later, through the agency of a smart piece of work by Waata, the Reds were put into an’attacking position. Miller relieved the situation, but only for a brief space. The Reds returned and Tamati took a mark near the twentyfive, Kokiri failing to find the uprights. Mid-field play followed, then the Greens hammered at the Red defence. The ball shot, over the line, Rukingi forcing just in. the nick of time.
On change of ends mid-field play followed the kick off- Then the Reds gradually worked the play to the twenty-five, where a Green forward was, penalised for off-side. McColl secured from the kick and transferred the hall to the other end. Fast up and down play ensued, the Reds finally, attacking, which was stopped by C. Somervell marking. Later Brown secured a mark in a good position, but Kokiri failed to find the uprights. The Reds continued to press, and a passing rush —Tamati —Rukingi —Broughton—ended in the latter scoring near the corner. Rangi failed. The Greens now rallied and applied pressure. From a line-out Aiken secured and dashed for the line. Kicking over the heads of the .opposing hacks he followed up fast, and, picking up smartly, drew first blood for Garrison. Miller; failed to add. A period of mid-field play followed. ]-’? om near the twenty-five Broughton secured the hall -and, sending it out to Ivi'kingi, to Hamilton, the latter scored near the corner. Rangi again faded. Reds now had the better of play, and continued to press Garrison hard. Rukingi made a good opening triel then, passing out to Tamati, the latter dashed for the line and touched down. Kokiri failed. The Reds were attacking when the whistle blew noside. Mr M. Osborne refereed.
JUNIOR COMPETITION. KAITI-CITY (17) v. GARRISON (0). Kaiti-C-ity defeated Garrison by li points to nil. For the winners Winter (2), Moroll, Corbett and Pcswillo scored tries, one of which the lastnamed converted. Mr Osborne was referee. Y.M.P. v. United match did not eventuate. It is understood that the United players were unable to gain admittance to the ground. AUCKLAND GAMES. [PEE PEESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, June 9. The second round of the Auckland Rugby Union’s senior championship competition was started yesterday in cold weather with a few showers of rain. The grounds were heavy. City and Ponsonby were to have met in the principle match, but Ponsonby refused to play under the referee appointed, and City claimed' a win by default. Ponsonby will probably carry the matter further, as it had notified the appointment- hoard of its objection. Marist Brothers’ Old Boys heat University bv 11 points to 3, and College Rifles’heat Parnell, 6 points to nil.
SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT. TIMARU, June 9. The seven-a-side Rugby tournament on the King’s Birthday yielded a net profit of £l2O, half of which, as arranged at Coronation time, goes to the Ambulance Brigade Hall fund. CHRISTCHURCH MATCHES. Following are the results of yesterday’s games: Merivale 18 defeated ■Christchurch 8; Sydenham 9 heat Albion 3; Old Boys 23 beat College 3; Linwoo-d 6 defeated Marists 0. NO PLAY AT DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN. Juno 9Owing to heavy rain and hail showers on Saturday morning all Rugby football matches were postponed. WELLINGTON COMPETITIONS. WELLINGTON. June 9. The weather was very wintry yester-
day afternoon, there being heavy hail iand > rtihundsrstorms between 2 and 3 o’clock. Nevertheless the football matches were well attended. The senior Rugby results were: Petone (8) heat Oriental (G); Melrose (12) heat Victoria College (8); St. James and Wellington drew, no score; Poneke (24) beat Southerners (6). THE LEAGUE GAME. WELLINGTON DEFEATS NELSON. WELLINGTON, June 9. In the League match Wellington beat Nelson by 19 to 6. It was a poor game.
