BLASTING AT WHATAUPOKO.
SOME DAMAGING EXPLOSIONS. FLYING TREE STUMP DAMAGES ROOF. The widening of Dolman’s Lane, Whataupoko, -lias necessitated the removal of a line of trees. These were cut down in the usual way, and now workmen are busily engaged in blasting out the stumps. It is now reported that operations yesterday resulted in an accident which might hare easily been more serious. A charge had been placed beneath a stump and fired, and perhaps because it was too large or because those operating it had underestimated the probable power of the explosive, the result, it'is reported, was somewhat •disastrous.
Several windows were broken by the concussion and portion of the stump was hurled into the air, descending on a. house near by and damaging the roofing iron, which will have to be considerably repaired. A portion of a fence was also knocked down by part of a flying stump, and a gateway was considerably damaged-
