STABBING AFFRAY AT OPOTIKI.
TAMEHANA WIREPA CHARCED WITH MURDER.
EVIDENCE AS TO HARD DRINK-
ING
[PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, June 13. The Herald’s Opotiki correspondent telegraphs that as a sequel to a stabbing alfruy at Pahaoa Pa] near Te Kaha, on Wednesday last week, Tamehana Wirepa was 'charged at the Police Court with murdering Hamana Wirepa,land with stabbing Tuhi Tuara. Wirepa and William Mowland with a knife. ' Tuhi Toare, who was severely wounded in the affray, was the first witness and gave evidence concerning the affray. William Mowland, bush contractor, said he took six ordinary bottles of whisky with him from Te Kaha ta Pahaoa, arriving there about 10 a.m. on June 5. He and others concerned in the affray were drinking from the time of his arrival until four o’clock in the afternoon, and consumed four bottles of whisky. At four o’clock he left for Te Kaha for more whisky, returning about dark with six more bottles. He and others finished one bottle and might have tasted another. _
Several other witnesses gave evideuce. Tamehana Wirepa was committed to the Supreme Court for trial and left in custody for Auckland this afternoon.
